Finally, the klog has launched a moisturizer…the final step to complete the routine!

Launch by launch, the klog skin care line has expanded to develop a full routine of products… from a Double-cleansing Regimen and Jelly Toner, to treating the skin with our Snail Mucin Energy Essence and Soft Shield Pimple Patches. Friendly and dependable products, reliable ingredients and acne-focused solutions. Now, the klog is bringing a long-awaited addition to the team.

Introducing the klog Sebum Balancing Gel Moisturizer ($17)! An ultra-lightweight gel moisturizer concentrated with ceramides, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory ingredients to help calm, restore, and balance sensitive or stressed skin.

If you’re asking yourself—what is “sebum” anyway? You’re not the only one. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Sebum is a component of oil…a specific type made up of fatty acids, waxes, sugars, and other natural chemicals. It’s produced in the sebaceous glands of your skin, which are …everywhere.
  • Sebum is an important component of the skin barrier — and it can become unbalanced for a variety of reasons like hormones, pollution of the skin, or diet and dehydration.
  • If your skin has too much sebum, it can become oily and produce acne. If your skin has too little, it can be dry.

To achieve the goal of maintaining the balance of sebum within your skin barrier, products with specific ingredients can target this task. And the new klog gel moisturizer has got ‘em all. With nourishing and restoring ingredients like zinc, squalane, nettle leaf extract and pineapple extract, it not only delivers hydration, but balances and soothes unstable skin.  It’s safe for all skin types, and specifically targets blemish-prone skin.

The klog is formulated to be the friendly skin care that’s there for you when all else seems out of balance. And this moisturizer is an extension of that dependability. Having a stress breakout? Ate too much greasy food this weekend? This balancing moisturizer is here to mellow you out.

When the klog says affordable, they mean it.

At the affordable price of $17, this gel moisturizer is the key to a balanced routine (and…a balanced life $$$). Because of these accessible price points, the entire routine—every product sold by the klog— can be on your bathroom counter, improving your skin every day for LESS than $100 dollars. Seven products, a full routine, for only $99 dollars…wow.

Your new skin care routine by the klog:

Step 1: Plant-Rich Antioxidant Pore Cleansing Oil

Step 2: Double Action Exfoliating Cleanser

(OR

Step 2: Soft Sugar Foaming Polish)

Step 3: Hydra Shield Anti-Pollution Jelly Toner

Step 4: Snail Mucin Energy Essence

Step 5: Soft Shield Pimple Patch

Step 6: Sebum Balancing Gel Moisturizer

The klog is formulated with effective ingredients to deliver nourishment to every skin type. Everything you need to know about the newest addition to the klog skin care line—an exfoliating cleanser for a deep and hydrated clean.

The klog has always been the home to all things skincare. And over the years, the klog has created its own line of reliable, treatment-oriented, and effective products developed to give real results. The line has always been—and will always be—developed by Soko Glam Labs, a team of highly skilled in-house experts, estheticians and chemists.

First came the award-winning and #1 best-selling product on Soko Glam, the klog Soft Shield Pimple Patch ($6). Then we tapped into our K-Beauty roots with the new favorite the klog Snail Mucin Energy Essence ($17). And most recently came the recently launched Sweet Potato BHA Clay Mask ($19), a multi-functional clay mask to round off your skincare routine altogether.

Now, we’ve just re-launched the klog Soft Sugar Foaming Polish ($13). A daily foaming cleanser with superfine sugar exfoliant that deeply cleanses and leaves skin soft and hydrated. Let’s break it down!

Why Exfoliation?

Exfoliation brings a ton of benefits to the skin, including deep cleaning, brightening and softening.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, exfoliation can leave your skin looking brighter and improve the effectiveness of topical skin care products by enhancing absorption. Regular exfoliation can also help prevent clogged pores, resulting in fewer breakouts. Long-term exfoliating can even increase collagen production, which promotes skin elasticity.

There are two types of exfoliation—physical, and chemical. Physical exfoliation is the process of using any scrubbing or rubbing with a physical abrasive material to cleanse the skin of dead skin cells. Chemical exfoliation uses chemicals, like hydroxy acids (AHA/BHA) or retinol, with enzymes to renew new cells in the skin.

Although it might seem daunting, exfoliation doesn’t have to be rough on your skin, this new cleanser is the perfect way to be gentle and effective.

Introducing: the klog Soft Sugar Foaming Polish

This cleanser is unique in more ways than one. First, it’s a hybrid between a scrub and a foaming cleanser. The scrub-to-foam element works double duty to physically and chemically slough off dead skin cells and excess oil without drying the skin. The exfoliating properties don’t compromise your skin barrier, but instead nourish and moisturize it.

It’s a dual-action exfoliating cleanser packed with a blend of super-refined sugars, sunflower seed oil, and Vitamin E, working multi-functionally to exfoliate and moisturize all at once! Its unique foaming quality provides a deep cleanse and unclogs pores while leaving skin soft, hydrated, and smelling like sweet citrus.

The Ingredients

  • Superfine Sugar: a natural physical exfoliant to unclog pores
  • Vitamin E: an antioxidant to strengthen and anti-inflammatory to soothe
  • Sunflower Seed Oil: to moisturize the skin barrier
  • Apricot Seed Powder: to hydrate and improve skin health

When & How to Use Soft Sugar Foaming Polish

The klog Soft Sugar Foaming Polish is super simple to incorporate into your skin care routine. It’s an exfoliating cleanser, but it’s gentle enough for daily use! If you have particularly sensitive skin, use the klog Soft Sugar Foaming Polish two to three times a week.

For a super deep clean, use the Sugar Polish after oil-cleansing with the klog Plant-Rich Antioxidant Pore Cleansing Oil. Follow up with the klog’s Hydra Shield Anti-Pollution Jelly Toner and the klog Snail Mucin Energy Essence.

Massage a small amount in circular motions onto a damp face until sugar dissolves. Add warm water for a richer lather and rinse thoroughly.  The klog Soft Sugar Foaming Polish is vegan and cruelty free, plus formulated without parabens, sulfates, alcohol, mineral oil, and silicone.

At the affordable price of $13, this sweet cleanser is one step you won’t want to skip. Ready to try the latest klog product? Treat yourself exclusively on Soko Glam.

Don’t let your bathroom trash can fill with empty skin care and makeup waste. Instead, cosmetic products can be recycled and upcycled to support sustainability.

Spring and Earth Day are fast approaching, and Soko Glam has the health of the planet on its mind. When it comes to skin care, many times, items are packaged in a way that makes them difficult to recycle. Luckily, companies that practice and encourage sustainability make it easier to recycle products that you otherwise wouldn’t know what to do with. TerraCycle® is a social enterprise on a mission to eliminate the idea of waste.

As a passionate member of the skin care community, I tend to produce a lot of skin care waste, whether it’s an empty bottle that I used to the last drop, or a gifted product that didn’t resonate with me. Programs like TerraCycle exist to safely and effectively recycle waste that isn’t as typical as the Diet Coke you can just toss in the office recycling bin.

That’s why Soko Glam has joined forces with Terracycle to help skincare junkies recycle their empties. They’ve teamed up with Terracycle’s Zero Waste bin program to make sure empty bottles and products can be recycled and get a second life as material used to make things like parks and playgrounds.

The TerraCycle solution

TerraCycle is unlike traditional municipal recyclers, instead focused on a wide range of waste streams that are typically not locally recyclable. This allows for products that normally wouldn’t be recycled to contribute to the difference in our environmental sustainability. TerraCycle reuses, upcycles, and recycles waste instead of landfilling it. This moves waste from a “linear system” to a circular one, allowing it to keep cycling in our economy.

TerraCycle is where sustainability meets high-energy innovation. The beauty industry has the opportunity to contribute to the global sustainability goal, and partner with organizations like TerraCycle to easily and effectively make a difference, so why wouldn’t we?

How does it work?

Terracycle offers free, national recycling programs to make it easy to eliminate waste. To date, over 202 million people in 21 countries have helped to collect and recycle enough waste to raise over 44 million dollars for charities around the world. TerraCycle offers a range of national, easy-to-use recycling platforms allowing everyone to #RecycleEverything.

Free recycling programs

TerraCycle offers free recycling programs funded by brands, manufacturers and retailers to help collect and recycle that hard-to-recycle waste, like skin care bottles and makeup products. Consumers simply choose the free program you’d like to join, and start collecting in their community. After downloading free shipping labels, waste can be sent to TerraCycle to be recycled effectively.

Zero Waste Box platform

TerraCycle’s Zero Waste Box™ platform allows consumers to recycle almost any type of waste, including those that wouldn’t traditionally be accepted to recycle. Choose the waste stream you’d like to recycle, purchase your preferred box size, collect your waste, and send it to TerraCycle to be repurposed (shipping is included).

Loop

Loop is a program developed by TerraCycle, offering day-to-day products in refillable containers that would usually come in non-reusable plastic. The products are from trusted brands (including skin care and beauty brands) and can be delivered to your front door. Loop will even pick up your empty containers and ship new ones to you.

Turns out this treatment just got even buzzier

In the world of cosmetic procedures and treatments today—fillers, injectables, implants—the focus is on the face. It seems that in every magazine  we pick up and in every reality show we watch, someone has just received botox or plumped their lips with a hyaluronic acid based filler.

Among the most popular procedures still on the rise is Botox. In the past five years, the number of people undergoing Botox treatment has increased by over 40%. But the newest emergence in the facial cosmetic realm is the new, more subtle version of Botox—baby Botox.

What is baby Botox?

Actually first, a quick refresher on what Botox itself is. Botox is a drug doctors have been using for years to treat wrinkles and facial creases.

The term ‘Botox’ is actually a brand name of a toxin made by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. There are other brands that produce this toxin in an injectable form, such as Dysport and Xeomin, but Botox is the term you hear most often because it was the first injectable version of the drug. Basically, calling any injectable botulinum toxin ‘Botox’ is like calling a tissue a ‘Kleenex.’

The most common use of Botox injections is to temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. The injection relaxes the injected muscle so that it can’t contract. This softens the muscles and makes the area much smoother and tighter. The effects usually last somewhere between 3-6 months. So, maintenance is needed,

So, let’s dive into baby Botox. The difference between traditional Botox and baby Botox is that it only uses smaller doses of the toxin. The effects are limited and more minimal, with less dramatic and more natural-looking results.

Baby Botox is used on facial areas that are more prone to wrinkles or fine lines. These targeted areas include the wrinkling at the forehead, crow’s feet, brow furrows, jawbone, lips, lip fillers, frown lines and neck.

Instead of using 35 units of the toxin, for example, you can use 10 units in targeted micro-injections. A good candidate for baby Botox is someone who may not have had Botox before and wants to try it out. Another reason someone might get baby Botox is if they are in their twenties and want to prevent fine lines before they start to appear.

The Cost of Baby Botox

In 2018, the average cost of Botox was $311 per procedure in the United States, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Since micro-Botox uses diluted “microdroplets” of the Botox cosmetic, it may cost less than this traditional average. In addition, the maintenance for baby Botox is less than that of traditional, requiring less follow up appointments (which = less $$$).

Before You Go

No cosmetic procedure is a ‘one size fits all’ deal. It’s important to discuss your individual concerns and goals with your doctor before any treatment. It can be helpful to ask to see a portfolio of before-and-after images of the specific doctor to compare and confirm that you like their work. On the day of your appointment, remember to arrive makeup-free.

The Bottom Line

Baby Botox is a great alternative to traditional Botox injections, offering a more natural and less dramatic result. Both want to achieve  the same goal—a smooth and fresh complexion. Sounds like the best of both worlds, so it’s no wonder it’s the hottest cosmetic trend on my Instagram feed.

Navigating the effects of hormonal birth control is a difficult process.

I—like a lot of other people with a uterus, have been on “the pill” for almost ten years. For so long, it was just something I never even thought twice about, I would just wake up, swallow my birth control, and go about my day. That is until I was trying to manage balancing my hormones, my contraceptive options, and the state of my health, which in turn, had a pretty big impact on my skin—something I was not expecting at all.

Last year, the chaos of the pandemic finally managed to reach every little corner and piece of my life—even my hormonal birth control. On a Sunday morning in March, just like I did every four weeks, I sat at the pharmacy window to pick up my pack of pills for that month. But when I opened up the package, my usual brand of birth control was not inside. Instead, I was given an off-brand generic version of my usual medication.

My first reaction was to call my doctor, of course. When I spoke to my gynecologist, I was told that this new pill pack was the ‘exact same pill.’ According to my doctor and pharmacist, this new pill had the same dosages of hormones, it was just the generic, non-name brand version of my usual medicine. So naturally, I continued to take the oral contraceptive and go on with my life. Supply chain problems, what can ya do?

Two months later, and two pill packs in of this new medicine, my skin was a disaster. It was the first time in my life I had struggled with acne, and though that in itself may have been a blessing, it was frustrating being a 21 year old with what felt like the skin helplessness of a middle schooler.

It was the first time I recognized the relationship between mental health and acne. I was discouraged, confused, and extremely self conscious. I weighed all of my options for this random acne crisis that was so out of character for my skin—could it be stress? My diet? The products I was using? My mask? I began to trial and error, becoming increasingly frustrated, and hitting dead ends.

An estimated 14% of those with a uterus aged 15-49 in the USA take birth control. Some take the birth control pill for its intended use, while others take the pill for its long list of unintended side effects, including acne treatment. However, for a portion of people, certain birth control pills can cause acne due to the skin’s reaction to the androgenic effect that some birth controls have. Androgens are characteristically male hormones that contribute to acne, hair loss, and unwanted hair growth.

This hormonal birth control for me was stubborn. It consisted of an extremely rough and bumpy skin texture around my jawline, with tiny whiteheads that just multiplied on the surface of my skin. I was also experiencing acne around my mouth and nose that was deep, under the skin, and painful.

It wasn’t until my skin continued to worsen for another month, and with another pill pack gone, that I thought about the impact that this different medicine may be having on my skin.

I was so confused, I thought birth control was supposed to help clear skin? In fact, most times, it does. And in my case specifically, it probably was a factor in my clear skin before I had the unwanted pill change, and this new medicine was not reacting to my body in a regular way.

At this point it was June, I was going through a ton of emotional and physical stress, changes in environment, and my body felt all out of sorts. So, I decided to stop taking the birth control pill altogether. I had no idea if my birth control was what was negatively affecting my skin, but I was at the breaking point of trying everything but this, so why not at least see? Less than a month after stopping, my skin started to clear immediately, and by August and September, it had returned almost completely back to normal.

In combination with stopping the hormonal pill, I began using a face cleanser meant to target stubborn hormonal acne, PanOxyl. This water-based cleanser has 10% benzoyl peroxide to tackle deep, under-the-skin acne. It was truly the only staple skin care product that I saw results with at the time. The cleanser has strong acne-fighting ingredients, which in turn brought on a bit of dry skin.

I made sure to use a hydrating moisturizing cream to protect and nourish my barrier. One of my favorites is First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream, formulated with colloidal oatmeal, a skin protectant, and allantoin, a humectant that helps to calm irritated skin.

During this time, I also used a TON of SPF. Active skin care ingredients are strong and it was the dead of summer. You could find me in SPF 50, a hat and sunglasses, under an umbrella, under an awning.

The Bottom Line

Birth control has a powerful effect on your hormones, and your hormones have a direct correlation with your skin. If you are struggling with hormonal birth control or stubborn hormonal acne, have a conversation with your doctor about your concerns and needs, and remember that your acne is not your fault!

Dealing with acne is hard. And dealing with it on top of the rest of life’s struggles, like work and relationships amongst other things, can feel overwhelming.

Sometimes, it’s hard to separate the acne we experience from our personal identities. It’s easy to let acne feel like a part of our identity big enough to impact the rest of our lives– and even let it negatively affect our mental health.

But it’s so important to remember, you are not your acne. Your identity is strong and powerful among all things! Here is more information about the relationship between acne and mental health, and tips to keep thinking positively.

Acne and Mental Health

It’s not uncommon to get in your head when you’re experiencing skin struggles.

Along with the self-consciousness that can surround breakouts, anxiety and depression, among other mental health issues, can appear alongside acne. According to the British Journal of Dermatology, in the first year following an acne diagnosis, patients have a 63 percent increased risk of developing depression compared to patients who did not have acne.

Acne has also been said to impact the way we socialize with others. In a study published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, it was stated that acne and acne scarring impacted the way people present themselves in social situations, as well as even impacting the clothes those with acne chose to wear

What to Do If You’re Struggling

If you feel like your mental health—whether that is anxiety, depression, or a negative self-image—is impacting the way you live your daily life, it may be worth reaching out to someone to receive help.

Luckily, therapy is more accessible than it has ever been. Resources like Better Help and Talkspace offer affordable, professional therapy from anywhere.

Surrounding yourself with skin positivity is also a great way to combat the negative associations we’ve been conditioned to think about acne. If you’re on social media, following acne positive accounts, like isofiagrahn’s Sofia Grahn , Evelyn of normalise.acne, and Taylor from taylor_unfiltered, will help you unpack just why we feel so bad about ourselves when we experience breakouts. We are not our skin and there’s nothing inherently bad about acne!

To take skin positivity a step further, separate your acne from your identity. Keep a journal and jot down three things you love or like about yourself everyday.

Conquer Skin Positivity But Still Ready To Tackle Acne?

When it comes to your acne, it can be hard to know what is causing the breakouts and in turn, difficult to pinpoint a solution. One thing that is important to remember when your skin isn’t being agreeable is that sometimes, less is more.

First off, if you have access to a dermatologist, visit them! If your acne is persistent, painful, or deep, a derm can provide the help you need.

If you’re looking for additional acne insight, you should keep your skin care routine simple. Don’t over-cleanse or use products with harsh ingredients.

Dermatologists recommend using gentle cleansers with an active acne-fighting ingredient like salicylic acid, a type of beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that clears excess oil and dirt, or benzoyl peroxide, which guards against inflammation and kills acne-causing bacteria.

It can be tempting to steer away from moisturizers if you have acne-prone skin, but it’s just as important to hydrate skin with acne as skin without it, to maintain balance in the skin barrier. Look for a lightweight moisturizer with an anti-inflammatory agent or extract with antioxidant properties, like this Mugwort Cream by I’m From.

Avoid picking at your acne and skin. An easy way to aid this is utilizing an acne patch, like The Klog’s Soft Shield Pimple Patch. Physical shields helps keep your hands off your acne!

Bottom Line

If you can’t seem to figure out what products to use and when for your acne, reach out to your dermatologist and have a conversation about the next best steps to take for your skin! And the same goes for your mental health, never hesitate to reach out and ask for help when life feels difficult, no matter the reason.

Remember, you are not your acne and you are worthy of all the happiness!
