How to find the perfect moisturizer that will take your skin from now through winter, according to your skin type.

From overnight masks to serums to cleansers, you’ll find that many skin care products have a moisturizing element to them. Today, though, we’re isolating the category of moisturizers, which are the very last product you apply at night and the last before throwing on your SPF in the morning. The moisturizer category is, perhaps, the most daunting simply because there’s so much to choose from. They come in a variety of base types—ranging from gels to emulsions to full-on thick creams—and aim to plump, refresh, and seriously hydrate your skin.

RELATED: The Three Types of Ingredients to Look for in a Moisturizer

To help you narrow down your selection and find the moisturizer that’s best for you, we’ve broken down our ingredient and product recommendations by skin type.

Oily Skin

There’s a perpetuated myth that people with oily skin don’t need moisturizer. Because of this misconception, it’s common that those with oily skin actually become more oily when they skip out on using a moisturizer. When the skin is lacking necessary hydration, it can produce even more oil to overcompensate for its loss.

The bottom line: Even if your skin is excessively oily, it still needs to be replenished with hydration.

By regularly applying a moisturizer, you can actually plump your skin, reduce fine lines, and ultimately help regulate oil production to reduce that oiliness. This applies to acne-prone skin, as well.

Oily and acne-prone skin should use humectant non-comodogenic ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and aloe vera, as well as cold-pressed plant oils such as rosehip, camellia, and squalene. Conversely, this skin type should avoid ultra-heavy ingredients that may clog pores, such as olive oil, coconut oil, petroleum-based products, lanolin, and dimethicone.

We recommend the Klairs Fundamental Water Gel Cream, which is formulated with 63.7% Jeju green tea water that effectively calms skin quickly, while antioxidants help to combat against free radical damage, to help keep skin supple and youthful. Rounding out the formulation are amino acids and panthenol (vitamin B5) to keep skin smooth and super-hydrated for a bouncy, soft appearance.

Even oily skin types will love this watery gel cream, which absorbs quickly and easily into the skin, thanks to its unique “hydra emulsification system” which mimics the skin’s structure to help deliver hydration deeper into the skin than a traditional moisturizer.

Dry skin

We’ve said it before, and we’re happy to reiterate the point: As skin matures, oil production slows down and skin becomes ultra-thirsty. So while moisturizer is a must for any skin type, it is absolutely integral to dry and maturing skin if you want a hydrated, glowing, plumped complexion. If you live in a dry climate, or spend a lot of time indoors in the heat or air conditioning, you may also experience excessive dryness, which, like aging, can lead to increased fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, and loss of elasticity.

Unlike other skin types, dry and mature skin can handle rich oils and heavy formulations, and should therefore seek out products that really double down on moisture. You can also try products that moisturize while they tone, firm, and improve elasticity.

RELATED: The Do’s and Don’ts of Mixing Skin Care Acids

One of our favorites for dry skin and Best of K-Beauty™ winner for “Best Texture” is the Hanskin Real Complexion Hyaluron Moisture Cream. This rich, soothing cream packs a serious dose of hydration to keep dryness and redness at bay. It totes a special matrix of three types of hyaluronic acid help to draw moisture into the skin and keep it hydrated all day long.

Sensitive Skin

Those with sensitive skin should look for two primary qualities in a moisturizer: soothing capabilities and products with pure ingredient lists. Seek out natural, calming ingredients such as chamomile, calendula, oatmeal, green and white tea, honey, and fruit and nut extracts. Meanwhile, it could be beneficial to avoid products with potential irritants such as dyes, fragrances, excessive alcohol, and sulfates. Lastly, while everyone should conduct patch tests with new products, this is especially important for those with sensitive and reactive skin types.

Our top moisturizer choice for sensitive skin is Neogen’s Probiotics Relief Cream, which keeps skin youthful, resilient and firm with this probiotic and peptide-packed moisturizing cream. The formulation is infused 11 types of peptides help encourage collagen and elastin production, while probiotics build a stronger skin barrier and lock in all the benefits. Nourishing ingredients like royal jelly, jojoba oil, sunflower seed oil and shea butter help deliver hydration effectively to the skin for a smoother, more supple appearance and safe for sensitive skin.

Combination Skin

Combination skin is unique because it battles both dry bits and oily patches. It can also fluctuate from really oily skin one day to super dry skin the next. Since the primary issue is a “back and forth” between oily and parched, you should seek products that balance your skin. Green tea, vitamin E, and antioxidants are all top notch ingredients.

To soothe and balance your combination skin, we recommend the The Plant Base AC Clear Magic Cica Cream. This gentle formulation is comprised of patented ingredient Inflax™ which provides relief to irritated acne-affected skin and works as a powerful antioxidant, while Natural Protector™ provides soothing and revitalizing effects thanks to its acne-fighting properties. 55% centella asiatica (cica) extract and green tea powder calm inflammation upon application, while murumuru seed butter deeply moisturizes skin, helping to soothe even the most sensitive or irritated skin barrier.

Normal Skin

If you have normal skin, you have a lot more freedom when it comes to choosing a moisturizer that works for you, but it’s still important to choose a formula that’s going to keep your skin well-balanced and hydrated, even during changes in seasons and harsh environmental conditions.

If you’re dry or oily or even somewhere in the middle, we recommend Olivarrier Comfort Barrier Cream. This reparative and strengthen moisturizer helps protect and prevent moisture loss. Ingredients light squalane and fatty acids help fight against pollution and free radicals while yuzu water and sea buckthorn extract calms irritated skin.

The NY Mag writer’s debut book has changed more than just bookshelves.

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of New York Magazine’s resident beauty writer, Rio Viera-Newton

Always up for the latest and greatest in skin care, we closely follow her highly curated product recommendations- quickly adding them to our digital carts as soon as her insights go live on The Strategist. (Hey, who doesn’t want a chance to achieve Newton’s ultimate year-round healthy glow?)

Although the beauty writer’s picks always excite us, it’s not her great taste in skin care products that keep us coming back to Rio’s writing (although these definitely don’t hurt). It’s her ability to cut through all the skin care noise and deliver understandable, engaging information that resonates with readers.

Newton processes dermatologist insight wrapped in scientific jargon and weaves it into fun, conversational bite sized skin care facts that the average skin care junkie and non-expert can easily absorb and act on. In her writing, she’s not a stuffy fact-relayer, but the fun beauty-obsessed older sister with great tips you wish you had.

On March 23rd, Newton took her ability to make skin care information fun to print with the publication of her first book, Let’s Face It.

Within the cute coffee-table book lies a myriad of skin care myth busting and complexion saving tips- it even offers a deep dive into Newton’s own skin journey, one that goes beyond that chronicled in the Google Doc that started it all

It seems Newton’s even gone further in her quest to “create a non intimidating, digestible guidebook that people can refer back to and rely on anytime skin care feels overwhelming or confusing”- providing cute, informational illustrations alongside harder to understand skin care concepts like pH levels.

We could wax poetic about Let’s Face It all day- but let’s see how Newton’s inaugural text resonates with three versed skin care lovers.

The Reviews

“Absolutely loved Rio’s book! Let’s Face It is packed with education and Rio’s writing (+ illustrations) made it so easy and fun to learn.

I loved how Rio described the five pillars of skin care and really enjoyed learning about the different ingredients that fall under each pillar. I’ve added the four facial massaging steps to my routine and my morning and evening routines have become even more meditative. As Rio says, think of your skincare routine as an opportunity to check in with yourself twice a day and throw out that magnifying mirror immediately!”

-Michelle

Let’s Face It is everything I want skin care to be: fun, accessible, and educational. The trendy illustrations scattered throughout the book are a great way to catch the reader’s attention and deliver skin care info in even more accessible ways!

I’ve always struggled with relaying my skin concerns to dermatologists. Sometimes, it feels like we’re speaking different languages. The derm lingo tips Newton expanded on will definitely better prepare me for future doctors visits. Beyond language, I also loved her breakdown of the different textures and formulas of skin care products. After reading her exploration of cream and milk products, I incorporated the Make P:Rem Safe Me. Relief Moisture Cleansing Milk into my morning and night routines. This is no surprise though, I’ve been known to pick up a few Rio Viera-Newton recommendations in my day. Overall, her first book is a great read for beginners and experts alike.”

-Shannon

“As expected, I love this book. It’s super educational but is also a pleasure to read, as well as look at…I can’t resist a beautiful type face and cute illustrations!  All in all, completely recommend to any new or long time skin care obsessive.”

-Talia

Let’s Face It: Rio Viera-Newton is clearly everyone’s beauty-obsessed best friend.

If you’ve ever stumbled into skin care Instagram or perused NY Mag’s highly curated beauty and skin care recommendations, you’ve definitely seen some of skin care aficionado Rio Viera-Newton’s work.

She seemingly effortlessly translates all of the science behind skin care and popular products into conversational and super digestible information and product recommendations that you can easily act on.

Rio’s not a dermatologist, just an extremely passionate skin care amateur. Her categoric rise to fame all started with a simple mission: thwarting her own acne.

The honorable breakout squashing quest led her to a plethora of information that she soon turned into a Google Doc- chock full of K-Beauty skin care products, no less. This Google Doc spread like wildfire, soon landing her a job at NY Mag where she now uses her ability to cut through the skin care noise to deliver readers only the best of the best.

This knack inspired Newton to write her debut book, Let’s Face It, where she further uses her talent to make skin care information into something fun and accessible. Let’s Face It feels like a chat with your knowledgeable big sister- one that’ll leave you with healthy, nourished skin, of course.

We chatted with Rio about Let’s Face It, her OG text (the infamous Google Doc), and her favorite skin care saviours. To get in on our convo, read on below.

You’ve inspired a generation of consumers to really get to know their skin, which all started with a google doc packed full of tips and product recommendations. Do you still use any of the products that were listed on that infamous list?

Definitely! Cosrx was my introduction to K-Beauty and is still one of my favorite brands ever. But their Snail Mucin Power Essence, in particular,  is one of my real holy grails. You’ll always find a bottle in my medicine cabinet.

In a way, the doc, (that was later picked up by NY Mag), was your first skin care text. What inspired you to write Let’s Face It– and what was the hardest part of creating an entertaining and informational skin care hand-book?

I think all the information on the internet can make shopping and understanding skin care so stressful. So I wanted to create a non intimidating, digestible guidebook that people could refer back to you and rely on anytime skincare felt overwhelming or confusing.

It was really important to me that it never felt like a textbook—I wanted it to read like a friend, with beautiful charts and illustrations that make digesting the information even easier. Honestly, the hardest thing for me was figuring out when to stop! I could have spent ten more months researching and writing.

Your journey started with a ton of research- who have you come across during your time in the skin care world that has completely inspired you?

One of the greatest perks of my job as a beauty writer is the access to brilliant dermatologists and estheticians. With this book in particular, I worked closely with Dr. Loretta Ciraldo, a board certified dermatologist, clinical researcher, and brand founder. We would chat for hours on the phone about research, products, cosmetic chemistry, and ingredients. She’s an incredible teacher and I learned so much from her.

Skin care is a constantly changing world! What’s something you’ve learned while writing Let’s Face It, whether it be a tip or stat, about skin care that you didn’t know before?

Something that really stuck with me is that your moisture barrier (which, put simply, is the outermost layer of your skin that keeps harmful elements out and moisture in) is one of our skin’s defense mechanisms against acne causing bacteria. So, supporting your moisture barrier with wonderful hydrating and nourishing ingredients is actually one step you can take to prevent future breakouts.

Let’s get into products: we know you’re a big vitamin C fan. What are your favorites right now?

I absolutely adore the Good (Skin) Days™ C’s The Day Serum and the COSRX Triple C Lightning Liquid (Editor’s note: this serum was discontinued in July 2020.) I tend to recommend the Good (Skin) Days™ serum to my friends with more sensitive skin, as it’s a lower concentration of ascorbic acid and a bit gentler. It also uses ginseng and mushroom, which are both excellent reparative and soothing ingredients.

What does your beauty routine look like currently? Are there any products in your beauty cabinet that everyone must have?

I’m a big fan of essences. The Olivarrier Dual Moist Toning Lotion (which Charlotte actually recommended to me during our IG Live) is incredible for soothing, calming, and delivering a big surge of moisture to my skin. I’m also forever a fan of the Then I Met You Birch Milk Refining Toner and The Giving Essence. Both are such cosmetically elegant formulas that leave my skin looking brighter, more even toned, and extremely hydrated.

With summer around the corner, can you recommend any seasonal skin care tips?

I think a double cleanse is so important in the summer. Not only is it great for taking off all that sweat and dirt from the sweltering, humid New York heat, it’s also great for removing your sunscreen. When people tell me that sunscreen breaks them out, I always suggest they try double cleansing.

So often, the issue is that they’re not taking their SPF off well enough before bed. I see this all the time with mineral sunscreens, which are absolutely wonderful products but a bit tougher to remove. The Then I Met You Living Cleansing Balm is a product I recommend all the time.

Let’s do a little trend predicting. Recently, hanbang and fermented ingredients have had a moment- what do you think will steal the spotlight next?

Hmmmm….Throughout 2020 and into 2021, I’ve definitely noticed a heightened interest in advanced, at-home technology like the Droplette, LED Masks, or the Ziip. These devices used to seem gimmicky to a lot of people, but I don’t think that’s the case anymore— consumers want to be able to create a spa-like experience from the comfort of their own homes. They’re also more willing to invest time and money in skincare that might not show immediate results, but will have long lasting payoff.

I’m going to be that annoying friend and nag you about using sunscreen, even in the fall and winter. If you don’t want to be told what to do, at least stick around for a few paragraphs because the sunscreen I’m going to talk about could be a game-changer — especially for you sensitive skin types.

I’ve often told you how important sunscreen is in many of my blog posts. In fact, it’s so important to the health of your skin, I’ve dedicated a whole chapter to it in The Little Book of Skin Care just to drill it in extra deep into your conscious.

Yes, every time you step outside without sunscreen. I want you to picture me with a very disapproving look and a finger “tsk, tsking” at you. I mean, if you’re not going to do it willingly, it’s probably time that I guilt you into doing that proper step of your skin care routine.

Confession time: Despite this being an extremely important category, I feel my sunscreen curation has lacked variety. The handful of sunscreens currently on the site are extremely worthy to be on Soko Glam, but it irks me that there haven’t been many options for you when you consider all your different skin types and needs.

So I’ve made it a point to be on the lookout for a sunscreen formulated just for sensitive skin types. I have heard SO many of your voices loud and clear about your skin being picky and reacting terribly to sunscreen. As an esthetician this is extremely upsetting to me because of just how crucial sun protection to your skin’s health. There should definitely be one for everyone. Finally, I think this might be the answer…

Enter Neogen Day-Light Protection Airy Sunscreen.

It comes is in this little unassuming tube that looks like it would be found at your local pharmacy. In other words, the packaging wasn’t particularly exciting to crack open, but that quickly changed as I opened it and I put my nose to it.

MMMM. It smells great — not like your typical poolside sunscreen that makes you think of cheap motel pool. After diving into the ingredients, I realized the pleasant, natural scent is from the natural extracts of rose, honey and raspberry.

When I squeezed the sturdy bottle, I realized just how much hydrating goodness it has. It has all of the qualities of what I look for in a  good sunscreen: It absorbs quickly, has titanium dioxide to physically block UV rays without leaving a white cast, and incorporates ingredients with anti-aging benefits, which is great if you’re going to be slathering it on every day (which I hope you do!).

Some key ingredients:

Rose extracts – Long known for their ability to intensely hydrate the skin.

Honey extracts – Function as anti-inflammatory ingredient. Prevents damage with a host of anti-aging properties including antioxidants, amino acids, and vitamins.

Raspberry extracts – Redness in your skin? Raspberries help constrict capillary activity, which minimizes redness in the skin. This is especially great considering the skin around my nose and cheeks gets notoriously red in the winter.

And lastly: the protection – This gem has broad spectrum 50+ protection. It’s basically the most coverage you can get in your sunscreen, and it protects you from both of the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. (Cancer, pigmentation, and burns be gone!)

What I love about Neogen is that top skin and R&D researchers in Korea formulated all their products with natural, gentle ingredients specifically for sensitive skin. You can see why this is my go-to sunscreen this season. I need something more gentle and nourishing and that still offers protection from the sun’s damaging rays like a coat of armor.

And because I’m all about that layering with my beauty products, it pairs nicely with any makeup I use after. I’ve tested this with both BB creams and cushion compacts!

I’ve said this before and this won’t be the last time I say it: Sunscreen is the best anti-aging product, so I’m glad to bring you the best of the best in my latest curation. If you want a sunscreen that has a natural scent, absorbs quickly, and layers well with makeup, this is it. Check it out here.

You bet I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for even more sunscreen options. This is where I need your help. Sound off below: Which sunscreens are your favorite? Are you a sunscreen junkie like me? How do you reapply your sunscreen? Any tips?

xx charlotte

The air is crisp, there’s the promise of snuggling in your coziest sweaters, and the leaves are putting on a brilliant show. If you want to compete with Mother Nature, you’re going to need a killer lip, and if you want to maximize that snuggle time, you’re going to need an equally killer sweater. Feeling inspired by some online window shopping, today I’m going to show you some options for both!

What screams fall more than a gorgeous wine-colored lip? On a recent trip to Toronto, Tiffany and I had the chance to play around with the Son & Park Air Tint Lip Cubes. We absolutely loved the creamy formulation, rich pigments, and adorable little cube packaging and applicator tip. To apply, just swipe the curved doe-foot applicator as you would with any other liquid lipstick. They smell heavenly, a bit rosy but very subtle. They wear pretty decently too, going on creamy and glossy while drying slightly matte and leaving your lips with a pretty stain even when wiped away.

Here’s Tiffany wearing shade 05 Berry Rose:

You know what pairs well with a classic berry wine lip? A classic slouchy black V neck sweater, like the Babaton one from Aritzia.

Another great offering from Son & Park Air Tint Lip Cubes that we fell in love with is the absolutely beautiful 06 Mexican Rose. It’s a fun alternative to a traditional red lip with its pop of fuchsia undertones. It’s bright but it fits right in with the fall’s color palette. I like to apply this and then blot very gently with oil blotting paper (never tissues — they might leave fuzzy fibers on your lips!). Blotting helps ensure you don’t get lipstick teeth and helps minimize any transfer.

Tiffany shows you exactly what I’m talking about here. Ugh, GORGY!

With such a fun color, I’d love to pair it with a fun, unexpected print like this amazing sweater from ANNTIAN Short Necky Sweater from 100 Year Party:

Anntian Short Necky Sweater

If you’re not much of a heavy lip person, or if you just want your eyes to take center stage with a smokey fall look, the Son & Park Lip Crayon in 06 Sugar Tint is the perfect choice. This chubby crayon gives your lips that “my lips but better” look along with some low-key hydration. It’s perfect to throw in your bag and you don’t have to worry about it leaving stains all over that special someone’s lips whenever you’re getting cozy together in this chilly weather. It also has that delicious rosy floral scent that makes me want to keep re-applying this product even when I don’t really need to.

Side note: This product is best suited for lips that aren’t darkly pigmented; you could still wear it if your lips are dark, but it will just look like a clear gloss. The crayon applies smoothly. Just outline and then fill in your lips for sheer gorgeousness.

Keep it low-key with Sugar Tint Crayon and this comfy slouchy turtleneck Siv Knit sweater from Need Supply Co.

This list isn’t complete without at least one red lip, and I have the classic red lip to end classic red lips: The Iope Colorfit Lipstick in #18 Classic Red. Talk about stunning: This lipstick shot to cult status after being featured on the hit K-drama My Love From Another Star. But besides its celebrity pedigree, it’s just a damn fine lipstick! The formulation is luxurious and the color is the perfect classic, true blue-toned red. It goes on creamy and you can’t help but feel like a star when you twist the heavy gold tube, revealing the exceptionally beautiful red bullet, and swipe the timeless shade across your lips. As with any bold color, exfoliated lips make the best canvas. If you don’t have a good lip scrub handy, a mix of brown sugar and coconut or olive oil makes a great paste to scrub flakies away and give your lipstick a smooth surface.

Classic loves classic, but you’re a little bit cooler than that, so why not marry this time-honored shade to a beautiful classic camel sweater with an updated shape? Try this one here from Need Supply Co.

Gorgeous fall lips and gorgeous fall sweaters go together like pumpkin and spice. Mix yourself up a delightful concoction today!

No matter what your beauty style, eyeliner is usually involved in some way, subtle or fierce. For those of us who veer towards the latter, not just any eyeliner will do. I refuse to suffer through any wimpy liner formulas and currently have a drawer full of trial-and-error ones I’ve bought with high hopes only to find them crease, slip, smudge or otherwise end up anywhere far from where I’ve applied them by midday.

The few liners I have met that I can say without a doubt are basically the equivalent of tattooing your liner on (without the needles, pain, or permanence) come from a handful of Asian beauty brands. Doesn’t surprise me, since there’s really no room for products that don’t perform in the competitive beauty market—it’s not a race, it’s a marathon…for which eyeliner can last the longest!

Top to bottom: TONYMOLY Backstage Gel Eyeliner, TONYMOLY Crystal Tear Glitter Eyeliner, CLIO Kill Black Waterproof Liquid Liner Pen, Dolly Wink Liquid Eyeliner, Clio Gelpresso Waterproof Pencil Gel Liner

The TONYMOLY Backstage Gel Eyeliner is great for liner beginners and super convenient for on-the-go since the brush is in the cap. The cute little inkwell design houses the gel liner at the bottom. Gel liners in pots like this one are great because you never have to gripe about your liquid liner pen drying out mid-stroke, leaving you with a sad, fading line. Also, you can really get a thick dramatic liner look without much effort and a nice easy blend-able finish, if that’s your style. This one feels super light and goes on black as night with a matte finish. I applied it in the morning and come evening, my cat-eye was still plenty sharp!

For those who prefer a standard pen liquid liner, Clio Kill Black Waterproof Pen Liner is super inky and super smudge-proof. Once it’s on and dry, it isn’t going anywhere (even on my oily eyelids). I like that the felt tip makes it easy to create really sharp lines and even tight-line between lashes. The color is a velvety black, deep and dark—one swipe should do it. It’s pretty easy to fix little mistakes with a cotton bud while it’s still wet, which is helpful. Removing it at night requires a nice oil-based makeup remover or cleansing balm—I wouldn’t really bet on just your face cleanser to do the trick.

White eyeliner is always a cool way to update your look with minimal effort, but in order for it to look cool, opaque white makes the most impact. TONYMOLY Crystal Tear Glitter Eyeliner is pretty much the festive go-to for me when I want something shiny but not necessarily chunky glitter. You could draw crystal tears around your eyes, as the name of this liner might suggest, and it would pretty much look like a shiny bold gem on your face—that’s how much this liner means business. Fair warning: A little goes a long way with this one.

My cousin brought me an eyeliner from Japan, Dolly Wink Liquid Liner—it’s apparently one of the cult liquid liners in Japan. After using it, I understood why. It has a brush tip, which is nice for making smooth lines and the color is super black and dries to a bit of shiny finish. This is another stay-put formula that lasts until I want to take it off at night. It can start to flake if you glob it on in too many layers, but it’s so opaque that one swipe is all you need, really.

Not everybody is all about liquid liners though and a really good pencil liner can create almost any look you want. Personally, I was never really a pencil eyeliner kind of girl because I always found them to be too waxy, difficult to apply evenly, sometimes too tough on my eyelids if the formula was too stiff, and they’d inevitably end up migrating underneath my eyes throughout the day.

Cue CLIO Gelpresso Pencil Gel Liner—my favorite type of liner (gel) in a pencil form. This one comes in a ton of jewel colors but my favorite is the silver and the golden black. Other than the fact that it in fact is super waterproof, cry-proof, and smudgeproof (unless you blend it as you apply), it applies SO smooth, like butter. Not that I expect you know what rubbing butter on your eyelids feels like, but you can imagine. This makes it so much easier to create sharp OR smoky eye looks because I don’t have to fuss with a pencil that makes me press really hard just to get the pigment onto my eyes. It’s a twist-up model with a micro-sharpener in the end—good to go anywhere!

I like my eyeliner how I like my cheese… SHARP! Easy with the Clio Waterproof Pen Eyeliner in Kill Black.

What are your favorite liners? Any technique tips… like how to get a liquid liner pen to stop shorting out (hate when that happens)? Are you a liquid, gel or pencil liner type?

Glow forth!

Korean entertainment is addicting. You know how I feel about my Korean dramas. You can easily catch me losing sleep for days to finish a series, with only piles of leftover Shin ramen cups and icky used tissue next to my bedside. I even don’t mind watching Korean commercials because they are so silly and entertaining. As I’ve blogged about before, one of my favorite shows I discovered while living in Korea is Get it Beauty.

It was a ritual, really. Every week I’d flop on the couch after dinner to watch this beauty show for the latest makeup and skin care tips while painting my nails (remember the barbaric days before gel polish, when manicures lasted like, a day?).

I still rave about this beauty show to this day because there simply isn’t a show in the universe quite like it. The talk-show type setting makes beauty less serious and more fun—just like skin care and makeup should be!

When I was invited to be part of their “K-Beauty Syndrome” show as their special guest to share insights about the rise of K-beauty in the U.S., I walked around in a zombie-like stupor because it was just such an insane opportunity; it didn’t feel real.

…Until I found myself staring at a script in the Get it Beauty Studio.

Someone pinch me now.

The day went by I’ve documented as much as I could during the yes, EIGHT hour prep and shoot process. Here’s a behind the scenes peek into my world that day (get ready for a lot of redundant peace sign selfies)!

After some quick intros and hello’s we jump right into rehearsing the script. Kim Jung Min (Get it Beauty co-host) and Kim Dasom (member from girl group Sistar) is in the room. Had no idea Dasom would be a special guest on the show, so I was pretty stoked when I walked in the room!

Honey Lee (former Miss Korea and the main Get it Beauty host) definitely belongs in my list of WCW. She’s so smart, pretty and talented. I could really go on and on but I’ll stop here.

We get ushered out the room for some final touchups on hair and makeup. Here we’re filming the intro to the show. I’m amazed at how natural they are. I’m about to be introduced next!

During the show I reveal my three most popular products—the first, our Manefit Bling Bling Hydro Gel Masks, Neogen Fresh Foam Cleanser

Get_it_beauty_water

… and finally the Son & Park Beauty Water

One of my favorite moments. When Dasom bets that she can guess one of the top sellers on Soko Glam and has to dance because she loses that bet…

Two hours of makeup and rehearsal and then another six hours just to film a one hour episode! It was pretty exhausting but I had so much adrenaline it didn’t hit me until it was all over.  I can see why you’ll need touchups on makeup and hair throughout the process. I was lucky that Dave was around to give me plenty of water and pep talks.

Because the shoot was so long, there were lots of chances for selfies in between the shoot. TONS.

Lucky to have met the charming Dasom from Sistar.

The talented makeup artist, Woo Hyun-jeung. I’ve watched her for years as a special guest on Get it Beauty and now here I am next to her taking selfies. Unreal!

So clever that Kim Jung Min with that upside down V. Might have to try that next time.

IMG_4089_3fa3f96c-853d-4e0b-a985-11b12cedc296

Small world! I run into Park Eun Kyung again (yes, the creator of the shattered glass holographic nails) at the Get it Beauty Studio. Just enough time to squeeze in a selfie before her shoot!

I end the episode by expressing my desire to share K-beauty and skin care products and techniques with the rest of the world! It’s a little cheesy, but hey it’s true.

So there you have it—a sneak peek into my world behind the scenes at Get it Beauty! Watch the first 30 minutes by clicking the video embedded below, and then catch the last 30 minutes using the link below the video. (Apologies in advance for those who don’t speak Korean. Once I find an episode with English subtitles, I will update this post!)

Enjoy!

P.S. If you end up watching, let me know what you thought about the episode!
Have you seen Get it Beauty before? What do you like about the show? What’s your favorite beauty tip you gained by watching the show?

Whether you’re in need of a reset after weeks in the sun at the beach or taking long walks in the park, these are the products that can help your skin get back on track.

Summer’s coming to a close and our minds are beginning to focus on any and all things fall. But, let’s face it: hot temperatures and strong UV rays aren’t going anywhere yet. Neither are their effects on skin!

Soko Glam knows that, which is why they’re giving you 20% off rejuvenating and protective skin care picks this Labor Day weekend with code SELFCARE20. From 9/1 through 9/7, the top K-Beauty retailer is discounting everything from face mists from Neogen to rice toners from I’m From just in time to stock up on end-of-summer and beginning of fall staples!

Read on to find our favorite end-of-summer product picks.

A Lip Mask

Even if you’re diligent about applying SPF on your face and body, there’s a good chance your lips have gone unattended to. Sun damage on this small yet important area manifests itself in the form of dehydration and inflammation. A nourishing overnight lip mask is a great way to nurse them back to health. The Klavuu Nourishing Care Lip Sleeping Pack contains avocado, sweet almond, and apricot seed oils to soften and heal chapped lips.

Another nourishing lip mask we love is the Unpa Bubi Bubi Lip Mask. It helps to fight off fine lines and wrinkles and moisturize the delicate lip area while you snooze with antioxidants and lactic acid.

A Cleansing Toner

Toners are an everyday kind of product in our book, but they can be especially beneficial in extreme weather seasons like summer and winter since their primary goal is to balance skin. The Acwell Licorice pH Balancing Cleansing Toner is a favorite among all skin types because it keeps your complexion at equilibrium while clearing your skin from excess sebum and debris to give you glowing skin.

These toners are just the boost your skin needs as summer comes to a close.

A Refreshing Sheet Mask

A sheet mask can’t fix everything but there’s something about the treatment that can make you feel rejuvenated inside and out in just 15-20 minutes.

The Leaders Amino Moisture Mask is particularly invigorating. This hydrating sheet mask has ingredients like amino acids, hyaluronic acid, ceramides and mineral water to calm nourish, soothe, and plump. Keep one in your refrigerator before application for an even more refreshing experience.

A Dark Spot Treatment

Not only can sun damage cause dark spots and hyperpigmentation, but they can make these spots more noticeable. If you had a little too much time in the sun this summer and need to do some damage control, the Acwell Licorice pH Balancing Intensive Eye Cream is a must-have spot treatment. Yes, you read it right. It is an eye cream, but this peptide and antioxidant-packed cream can be used as both an eye treatment and a spot treatment for dark spots. Licorice water and extract effectively fade brown spots, acne scars, and pigmented areas, plus soothe any inflammation.

A Clay Mask

You don’t have to have oily, breakout-prone skin to be dealing with both in the heat of the summer. A non-drying, purifying clay mask will serve you well. The Troiareuke Acsen Pore Control Mask contains Moroccan lava, kaolin and bentonite clay along with centella asiatica to clean out and minimize pores, brighten and moisturize for a more clear, even and firmer complexion.

I had a chance to meet manicurist Park Eun Kyung, celebrity nail artist and owner of Unistella nail salon in Cheongdam during my last trip to Korea. She’s famous for her shattered glass nail art, which you may have heard about from Vogue, Refinery 29 or Instagram—where the trend pretty much blew up.

We sat down at her salon in Cheongdam where Park told me all about how she got her start in the manicure world and her favorite K-pop clients. Take a look!

Also, if you’re ever in Seoul, Unistella Salon is a must-visit beauty spot, even if you’re not a nail person. It’s pretty much like looking at art on teeny fingernail-sized canvases.
