Struggling to fade your hyperpigmentation? Read on for some tips to help your products work better.

Hyperpigmentation is typically the result of acne, sun damage, or even hormonal changes and can leave its mark after the initial damage, making it a tricky skin care challenge to overcome. Ingredients like vitamin C and alpha hydroxy acids can help speed the process along, but if you’re making the mistakes below, you may not be getting the best results.

You’re not wearing sunscreen.

You probably know by now that sunscreen is a necessity for everyone, no matter the skin type or skin concern. Overexposure to the sun can lead to many future skin problems, such as accelerated aging and even skin cancer, but it can also exacerbate current concerns, including acne and hyperpigmentation. “Wearing sunscreen is essential to helping dark spots fade since they can be made worse by sun exposure,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Sourab Choudhury. Your brightening products can become pretty much worthless without wearing sunscreen everyday, since the spots can become even darker by just being outside.

This is especially true for those who have forms of hyperpigmentation such as melasma or sun spots, as those conditions can often be caused by sun overexposure and not wearing SPF. Melasma is also caused by hormonal factors such as pregnancy or use of birth control, but the dark marks can be made worse without regular use of sun protection.

Not to mention many ingredients that are popular for fading hyperpigmentation (such as vitamin C and alpha hydroxy acids) make your skin even more sensitive to the sun, meaning that applying SPF is that much more important if you want to fade your pigmentation. Dr. Choudhury recommends “either a physical sunscreen with zinc or titanium dioxide or a broad spectrum chemical sunscreen. In either case, look for at least 30 SPF and reapply it frequently when outside.”

RELATED: The Best Skin Brightening Ingredients

You’re switching products too often.

If you’ve been frustrated by dark spots that won’t seem to budge no matter what products you try, you’re not alone.  “It can take several months or years for dark spots to fade, and it really depends upon the individual’s skin type and severity of the pigmentation,” says Dr. Choudhury. “The darker someone is and the worse the pigmentation, the longer it generally takes for hyperpigmentation to resolve.”

Most products and ingredients take about six to eight weeks to show any results at all, so it’s best to use one product consistently for that amount of time before you write it off completely. We love using pure vitamin C, like that used in Good (Skin) Days C’s The Day Serum, consistently for spot fading.

Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation is easier to fade than something such as melasma, which doesn’t respond to brightening products in the same way that PIH does. Laser treatments are seen as the most effective way to fade dark spots from melasma.

You’re exfoliating too harshly.

Exfoliating is a common way to fade pigmentation, since it can clear away dead skin and reveal smoother and clearer skin underneath, therefore working to brighten any uneven skin tone. If you prefer physical exfoliating however, being a little too rough with your skin can cause more harm than good. “Patients sometimes try to aggressively exfoliate dark spots to fade them, but that can often make the problem worse,” says Dr. Choudhury. “Too much scrubbing can darken the hyperpigmentation.”

A chemical exfoliant might be a better choice than a physical scrub though it is still possible to over-exfoliate with a chemical formula, but you should be fine if you stick to use once a day, 1-3 times per week. Look for products that include ingredients such as glycolic acid or lactic acid, which are great for fading dark marks. We personally love the Isntree Clear Skin 8% AHA Essence.

RELATED:How to Treat Hyperpigmentation on Dark Skin Tones

You’re not addressing the root of the problem.

PIH is the result of inflammation on the skin, such as acne, eczema, or psoriasis, and melasma and sun spots can both be caused by a lack of sun protection. If you want to fully treat your pigmentation, getting down to what’s behind it is just as – or even more –  important as using products to just fade it. “The more difficult question is ‘what is causing the pigmentation?’ Determining the underlying cause allows us to treat the condition itself and not just the symptoms,” says Dr. Choudhury. Finding ways to treat acne and making sure you consistently apply (and reapply!) SPF can prevent pigmentation from popping up in the first place. If you focus on treating the root problem of your hyperpigmentation, you might be able to avoid it entirely in the future.

If you want clear, healthy skin, cleansing is arguably the most important step. Keep reading to find out what to look for in a water-based cleanser and our top K-beauty recommendations.

A cleanser is the backbone of any skin care routine and is the first step in keeping skin clear and healthy. That’s why it’s so important to use the right formula for your skin type and concerns.

We’ve already shared our favorite oil cleansers for each skin type (the first step in the double cleanse method), so today we’re helping with which water-based cleanser (the second step in the double cleanse method) you should use based on your skin type.best water-based cleansers

Oily Skin: Mediheal Intensive Pore Clean Cleansing Foam

Since oily skin types can accumulate even more oil throughout the day, it’s important to find a cleanser that can control excess oil and sebum and unclog any dirt or debris from pores. We recommend the Mediheal Intensive Pore Clean Cleansing Foam, which uses charcoal to detoxify and deep clean any oil and acne-causing bacteria. It also contains zinc to soothe the skin and mushroom extract, an antioxidant that nourishes the skin barrier to prevent skin from getting dehydrated and over-producing oil. Those with oily skin will also love that it leaves skin with a matte finish.

Combination Skin: Neogen Green Tea Real Fresh Foam Cleanser

This best-selling foam cleanser works for all skin types, but it can be especially beneficial for those with combination skin. The star ingredient is fermented green tea extract, which is rich in antioxidants, hydrating, and soothes inflammation caused by breakouts. Unlike many foam cleansers out there, the formula is gentle and doesn’t strip skin, making it perfect for everyday use.

Normal Skin: Klairs Rich Moist Foaming Cleanser

If you have normal skin, your main goal should be to find a cleanser that keeps your balanced skin from getting off kilter.  For this, we love the Rich Moist Foaming Cleanser, a creamy foam cleanser from Klairs. It contains tea tree leaf oil to clear away impurities while hydrating, and a blend of amino acids and hyaluronic acid that moisturizes and promotes skin renewal for a rejuvenated complexion.

Dry Skin: Solved Skincare Coconut Water Cleansing Foam

Water-based cleansers can be especially tricky for those with dry skin, since many can be a little too drying in an effort to make the skin squeaky clean. Foam cleansers are usually the biggest culprit in this case, but the Solved Coconut Water Cleansing Foam is different. Formulated with 75% real coconut water, this foam-to-cream cleanser is able to deeply hydrate your skin while gently cleansing it. The ingredient is rich in amino acids and skin-benefitting proteins to replenish and refresh skin. The cleanser also has a mild pH of 5.5 and contains clean ingredients that are all EWG Green-verified, so it won’t irritate skin.

Sensitive Skin: Commleaf Rice Purifying Foaming Cleanser

Sensitive skin can be easily aggravated, so it’s important to find a cleanser that’s gentle and non-irritating to balance and prep your skin for the rest of your routine. The Commleaf Rice Purifying Foaming Cleanser is lightweight and perfect for sensitive skin types, featuring all natural ingredients such as deep sea water to hydrate, rice water to soothe and brighten, and vegetable surfactants to gently cleanse the skin. This hypoallergenic and vegan formula is able to keep blemishes at bay and calm irritated or inflamed skin.

If a product is all over Instagram or in all of your friends’ medicine cabinets should you be using it too? Welcome to “Do You Really Need…”, a new series where we discuss, with the help of some experts, how to determine whether or not a trendy or divisive product really belongs in YOUR skin care routine. Today we’re discussing humidifiers.

It’s technically still summer, but the weather outside is already showing us that fall is following very closely behind. To combat dry skin during this time of year, many turn to a humidifier to supplement a hydrating product routine. But, can keeping a humidifier at your desk and/or bedside really make a difference in the state of your skin? We spoke with two dermatologists for more insights on a humidifier’s benefits.

How can the humidity of the air affect skin?

Even if your skin feels the same all year round, the humidity of the air can still be affecting hydration levels as well as your skin barrier. When the air is more humid, there is little to no evaporation of moisture from the skin, which according to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Viseslav Tonkovic-Capin, keeps your skin more supple and smooth. Therefore, low humidity causes an adverse effect on your complexion.

“When the air is dry, water readily evaporates from our skin, which becomes dry and cracked – similar to the bottom of a dried out puddle,” says Dr. Tonkovic-Capin. If your outer skin layer becomes dehydrated, it can make the skin barrier less functional in its protection of your skin.

Low humidity can be even more damaging if you’re worried about signs of aging. In a 2007 scientific study in Japan on the skin effects of room humidity, volunteers had their skin conductance, elasticity and wrinkles assessed after acclimating to a high-humidity room, and then later again after being in a low-humidity room. The results showed that a 30% decrease in humidity could significantly reduce skin elasticity and deepen fine lines and wrinkles in just 30 minutes.

This is especially relevant in the colder months because not only is the air less humid outside, but central heating inside your home or office can have the same drying result and strip even more moisture from the skin.

RELATED: The 3 Winter Skin Care Myths You Shouldn’t Believe

How does a humidifier help?

It’s common to use a humidifier to prevent these negative effects on your skin. But, how exactly does a humidifier work? “A humidifier is a portable device we can use to help control our environment,” says Vermont-based dermatologist Dr. Laura McGevna.“It forces moisture into the air and back into our skin, which helps seal the skin barrier.” Essentially, humidifiers emit water vapor into the air to improve the humidity of the area around it, which can slow down or stop the evaporation of moisture from the skin.

Using a humidifier can be especially beneficial if you’re starting to notice the signs of low humidity on your skin, but also if you usually deal with dryness or flakes. Those with dry skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can even see an improvement in some of the common symptoms, according to Dr. McGevna. She recommends using a humidifier at night any time you turn on the heat, especially if you live in an environment that’s cold for the majority of the year. Dr. Tonkovic-Capin says you should also use one “as soon as you start noticing patches of dry or cracking skin.”

So, do you really need a humidifier?

It depends on how much you think you would benefit from it. If you have naturally dry skin or it has been dehydrated and cracking from the cold weather, a humidifier can consistently increase overall hydration of the skin without the application of any skin care. It could also make your life a little more comfortable if you have dry patches all over, such as with eczema or psoriasis.

But if you’re not worried about low humidity or dry skin, adding moisturizing products could be enough to keep your skin soft and hydrated throughout the season. If you prefer the latter, Dr. Tonkovic-Capin suggests applying products with humectants, that “wick moisture to the skin.” Look for skin care products that have ingredients such as aloe, panthenol, or glycerin.

Looking for a wash-off mask that won’t dry out, irritate, or strip your skin? Below we share some of our favorite nourishing formulas.

After being exposed to the dry winter air, there’s nothing like coming home and applying a hydrating treatment on your skin. While a sheet mask may be more convenient at times, we love hydrating wash-off masks for the ability to treat more targeted areas, the cost per use, and the spa-like experience.

Here, we’ve rounded up some wash-off masks that can tackle a variety of skin concerns while also offering a hydration boost.

Thank You Farmer Back To Relax Soothing Gel Mask

This cooling gel mask is great for rejuvenating dehydrated or sensitized skin. It contains pomegranate extract, an ingredient that is rich in vitamin C in order to help repair damaged skin, while multiple botanical extracts – including aloe vera, fig, and licorice root – work to nourish sensitized skin and reduce inflammation. Hydrating ingredients allantoin, panthenol, and hyaluronic acid round out the moisture-boosting formula.

Wash the formula off after 10-20 minutes and follow with your favorite moisturizer or leave it on overnight as a sleeping mask.

Klavuu Special Care Pearl Glow Mask

Many clay masks can make the skin feel tight or dry, but this one from Klavuuis able to effectively draw out impurities without stripping the skin. It’s formulated with kaolin and bentonite clay to clear out pores and remove excess sebum, while pearl extract brightens and tones to make your skin glow. Aside from this mask’s clarifying and illuminating properties, it can also deeply moisturize dry skin with the help of squalane, aloe, argan oil, and ceramides. Other natural oils such as camellia seed oil and jojoba oil are also included to provide additional hydration.

Erborian Milk and Peel Mask

This multifunctional product from Erborian both resurfaces and nourishes the skin, delivering a healthy dose of hydration to the skin barrier. It’s able to exfoliate dry skin and revitalize the complexion with enzymes. Also included is both sesame milk and sesame oil, to hydrate skin using emoilent properties. This mask is suited for all skin types, but can be especially beneficial for acne-prone skin and those seeking anti-aging resurfacing treatments.

RE:P Bio Fresh Mask With Real Calming Herb

With the use of natural ingredients, this vegan clay mask can gently exfoliate while hydrating. Kaolin clay is able to soften rough texture and cleanse debris from pores, and flower extracts – including jasmine, calendula, and rose –  soothe and moisturize the skin. 100% real fresh rose and jasmine flowers are also mixed into the formula to further revitalize dull skin. Artemisia annua extract (also known as mugwort), a popular  healing ingredient in Korean beauty products, is also featured in this skin-benefitting mask.

Today, we’re talking about how to resist picking your skin.

Picking at my skin is definitely my biggest skin care guilty pleasure. It’s so satisfying, but it truly causes a lot more harm than good. As someone who’s always been a serial picker, I’ve dealt with (and am currently still dealing with) my fair share of acne scars and hyperpigmentation. But, I have gotten a lot better at kicking the habit by incorporating some everyday practices into my routine to stop me from squeezing a pimple as soon as I see it.
For example, something that’s helped me a lot lately is putting post-it notes on my mirror with reminders to keep my hands away from my face. This has been effective for me because it will genuinely stop me in my tracks as soon as I’m about to pop a pimple, or I’ll pause if I’m in the middle of picking to think and reconsider. But even though this strategy has been helpful in clearing my skin, there are still moments when I see a whitehead and just can’t resist the urge to pop it (especially if it’s bigger or has already come to a head). This made me wonder… how does everyone else actually stop themselves from picking at their skin?
To help with my dilemma, I decided to ask other Soko Glam staffers for their own suggestions. Below, find their tips and tricks and then share yours below!

Apply a pimple patch or spot treatment.

“My anti-picking trick is to put a COSRX pimple patch on budding pimples, not just ones that are already popped. It prevents my hands from scratching the surface and introducing bacteria, even if I unconsciously touch my face,” – Vivian Loh, graphic designer
RELATED:  The Spot Treatments For Different Types of Acne
“[Pimple patches] make it so much more bearable, and they really do work. I particularly will get cystic acne near where my glasses touch my face, and I often will put a pimple patch over the area even if I don’t see a ‘head.’ It really helps to soothe it and keep it from getting irritated further,” – Sara Gardner, brand marketing manager

Keep skin hydrated.

“I notice my skin gets itchy when it’s dry so I try to use a very hydrating product or mist throughout the day [so I’m not tempted to touch it]. I also find that ingredients like centella asiatica help a lot.” – Vanessa Nguyen, junior graphic designer

Don’t use a magnifying mirror.

“I have a double-sided mirror, and there was a period when I would sit in front of the magnified side and the next thing I knew 30 minutes had gone by and my face would be red and swollen from my picking at any tiny blemish or blackhead I could find. During this time I was getting consistent breakouts on and around my chin and I realized that picking was just making things worse. I forced myself to stop using the magnified side of the mirror (this took some time and major self-control), and as a result I stopped picking as much. Low and behold, breakouts have become a much less common occurrence.” – Sarah Ferguson, content manager

Think of the effect it can have on your skin.

“Whenever I see a pimple or blackhead flare up on my forehead, I always approach it with the mindset that picking at it will only make it worse, resulting in an even bigger scar or hyperpigmentation.” – Sara Miranda, PR and events intern
RELATED: The Reason Why You Keep Getting Pimples in The Same Place
“Before I pick, I try to think and remember how inflamed and red my face looks afterwards, and how unhappy I’ll ultimately be with my skin after picking – even if it might be instant gratification in the moment.” – Sara Gardner

What are some ways YOU resist picking or popping your pimples? Do you use some of the same practices mentioned by Soko Glam staffers? Share in the comments below!

After years of trying almost every brightening product on the market, I finally turned to a prescription acne treatment for my hyperpigmentation. Read on for my results so far.

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t pick at my skin. Even when I was too young to have blemishes on my face, I would pick at any scab on my legs and arms that I had acquired. When my first bout of teenage acne hit, even the smallest whitehead would be poked and prodded to death. In college my skin changed again and my acne became a little more frequent. That’s when picking went from a side hobby to a full-time job.
This resulted in dark hyperpigmentation all over my forehead. I obviously realized that picking was making my skin worse, but after doing it for so long, it was like I couldn’t help myself.
After finally getting my picking habit under control (at least most of the time), I had to deal with tackling the years of damage in the form of PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) that were left over.
Vitamin C, azelaic acid, hydroquinone, alpha arbutin…I can’t think of a brightening ingredient that I haven’t tried at least once. Since the pigmentation was so dark, a lot of products simply wouldn’t work on my skin tone, and even the smallest of blemishes would lead to even more of dark spots to get rid of. I know that hyperpigmentation is something that takes a lot of time to fade, but I was growing frustrated.
After experiencing lackluster results, I had an idea. Maybe if I truly addressed the root of the problem – my mild acne – I could finally give the existing PIH a chance to fade for good. After doing some research, I decided that I should see a dermatologist to get a prescription for a topical retinoid such as tretinoin. My doctor ended up recommending Epiduo, a combination of 2.5% benzoyl peroxide and 0.1% adapalene gel. Adapalene has similar acne-fighting and exfoliating properties to tretinoin, but it’s not quite as harsh. Since I’d never tried prescription retinoids, she wanted to see how my skin reacted before jumping straight into an ingredient like tretinoin.
RELATED: How Tretinoin Can Treat Acne
As much as I was excited at the prospect of a solution, I was feeling nervous to try adapalene after reading about potential side effects such as burning, tingling, peeling, extremely dry skin and my biggest skin fear, purging. Nevertheless, I decided that it was worth the risk if I finally wanted clear skin.
adapalene before after

My Experience So Far

I followed the guidelines that are usually recommended when incorporating a topical retinoid into your routine: using only a pea-sized amount, using it every three days to start, and buffering the retinoid by applying a nourishing moisturizer first to avoid any irritation.
I then progressed to using the Epiduo every other night and I switched out my moisturizer for an essence, specifically the Neogen Real Ferment Micro Essence, which added some extra brightening power to my routine.
Now, I apply it every night directly on my skin after cleansing, and follow with a thicker essence (Cocokind Glow Essence with Sea Grape Caviar) afterward. My skin often feels dry and tight after applying Epiduo, so the thick essence has been helping keep my skin moisturized.
I believe that being cautious in my approach was the reason I didn’t experience any serious purging or major side effects. The only immediate effect I really noticed were the development of some blackheads on my chin and jawline, but they disappeared with continued use of Epiduo.

My Current Results

I’ve now been using Epiduo for about a month and a half, and I’ve already seen how my skin has changed. I haven’t experienced a single breakout while using this, and the small hormonal whiteheads that I get occasionally heal much faster with minimal scarring. The exfoliating properties of the adapalene are beginning to fade many of my older dark spots (finally!), while the benzoyl peroxide is eliminating my whiteheads faster than any product I’ve ever used. I’ve removed any exfoliating acids from my routine since it’s not recommended to use any AHA or BHA in combination with retinoids, but I’ve noticed that my skin texture is soft and smooth when I wake up – similar to the result of using an acid product. I’m hoping that with continued use, I can fade all of the hyperpigmentation on my forehead (something I used to think was impossible), and achieve the even complexion I’ve been after for years.

Soko Glam curator and co-founder Charlotte Cho obviously has a lot of favorite products on the site, but only nine made her list of what to gift this holiday season.

Considering she’s constantly testing products to be featured on Soko Glam, coming up with formulations for her own line Then I Met You, and the fact that she’s a licensed aesthetician, Charlotte Cho is definitely someone you’d want to receive a skin care gift from. The second best thing for those that don’t know her IRL? To be gifted one of her personal picks.
Charlotte chose her favorite Korean skin care products of the year as part of her very own Soko Glam gift guide. Learn more about some of her top picks below and why they’re perfect for everyone on her – and your! – list.

Mamonde Pore Clean Toner

“For anyone in your life blessed with large pores like me, they’ll love the effectiveness of this dual-layer formula that contains a purifying mud powder to mattify and absorb excess oil,” Charlotte says of this vegan toner from Mamonde. It features the herb Eusengcho (AKA Heartleaf) and “West Coast” mud to deep clean your pores and regulate oil, but without stripping your skin.
“When you’re oily or have a lot of blackheads, you really want something that’ll help mattify but still hydrate,” Charlotte says in the Soko Glam April Curations video. “This does that.”

Then I Met You Living Cleansing Balm

This cleansing balm comes from Charlotte’s very own line Then I Met You, but she’s not the only one that speaks highly of the award-winning product.
“It’s literally the most luxurious, silky cleansing balm, with an Allure Best of Beauty stamp of approval. It is probably on your best friend’s wish list, too,” she says.
RELATED: How Charlotte Created Then I Met You’s Cleansing Balm
Charlotte has spoken on her Instagram of the process that she went through to create the Living Cleansing Balm, which included “testing every single cleansing balm and oil I could get my hands on” to upgrade the double cleansing experience. “The balm will deep cleanse makeup, sunscreen, and impurities from the skin,” she says. “The creamy formulation doesn’t sting your eyes and cocoons your face with nourishing oils and them emulsifies easily with a bit of water.”

Mediheal Tea Tree Essential Blemish Control Sheet Mask

“This mask is such an effective way to hydrate, but also calm the skin and prevent breakouts,” Charlotte says. “It’s truly an essential sheet mask experience from the #1 sheet mask brand in Korea!”
In the July Curations video, Charlotte explains that she has used Mediheal sheet masks for years now, but she loves this one in particular because of its many beneficial ingredients. “It contains tea tree oil, herbal extracts, and willow bark that are all good for cleaning your pores – it also contains chamomile.”

Danahan Ginseng Seed Secret Essence

“Perfect for the winter, this is such a powerfully formulated essence made with ginseng seed extracts that will noticeably smooth out lines and plump up skin with antioxidants,” Charlotte tells us. This essence is so unique because it uses the ginseng seed extracts, which is about 2-3 times stronger than the ginseng root that is normally used in ginseng-infused products. According to Charlotte, it contains over 80% of the ginseng seed base, making it that much more powerful.
“It is a gamechanger, especially for those who have dry, rough skin or people who feel that they’ve lost a lot of elasticity,” she says in the September Curations video

The eye area is typically the part of your face that shows signs of aging first, making eye cream such a staple in any anti-aging routine. So, it makes sense that you would want to combine the two. But, is retinol really safe for the eye area? Keep reading to find out.

Why should you consider using an eye cream that contains retinol?

“Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that works by binding to retinoic acid receptors, which then can affect gene expression,” says New York City-based dermatologist Dr. Hadley King. “This makes them very powerful and able to produce significant changes in the skin.” According to Dr. King, the ingredient has the ability to “increase the turnover of skin cells, increase collagen production and decrease discoloration.” Using an eye cream with retinol can be extremely beneficial for anti-aging as it can work to smooth fine lines and wrinkles effectively and boost collagen production under the eyes.

What should you do to avoid irritation?

Because retinol is a strong ingredient, using it under your eyes has the potential to cause irritation. The under eye area is one of the most delicate areas on your skin, so it’s best to proceed with caution when using the ingredient.
RELATED: Do You Really Need…to Use Retinol?
NYC-based dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner recommends using retinol products specifically formulated for skin around the eyes as opposed to the retinol product you apply on your face, as they can be less irritating (though this can work for those who aren’t prone to sensitivity – patch test to be sure). “Eye creams containing retinol are usually specially formulated to contain low concentrations or mild forms,” he says. “They also contain hydrating ingredients to protect the delicate skin around the eyes.”
When implementing a retinol eye cream in your routine, both Dr. King and Dr. Zeichner recommend taking it slow and steady. They recommend starting with a small amount about two nights per week, then working your way up. You can also dilute it with your normal moisturizer to further prevent irritation.

When should you start using eye creams with retinol?

“It is never too early to start anti-aging! Retinoids are used regularly for teens for treating acne, so they are certainly safe for younger skin,” says Dr. King. However, they may not be totally necessary until you reach your mid-twenties and early thirties when cell turnover starts to slow down.

What are some retinol alternatives that can be found in eye creams?

If you have sensitive skin and don’t want to risk the irritation, there are many other anti-aging alternatives to retinol that can be used near the eyes. Dr. Zeichner recommends bakuchiol, which is “a botanical extract that works through the same receptors as retinol to help stimulate collagen.” It’s not quite as potent as retinol, and the possibility of irritation is much lower.
Dr. King likes eye creams with anti-aging ingredients such as vitamin C, goji berry extract, and peptides. Two eye creams we love that contain peptides are the Swanicoco Fermentation Peptine Eye Care Cream and the Elensilia CPP Collagen 80% Intensive Eye Cream (shop both below!).

Bottom Line

Retinol is a very effective ingredient, and its skin benefits can definitely be extended over to the eye area. But, it’s important to take it one step at a time. “Some people may not be able to tolerate it, but most people will be able to – if they start with a small amount of a moisturizing formula a couple of nights per week and increase as needed,” Dr. King says. And don’t forget to patch test!

If the zodiac signs were this year’s Soko Glam Best of K-Beauty™ Award winners, which would they be? Indulge us as we explain.

Whether it be animals, our favorite celebrities, or even types of weather, you really can interpret astrology in any which way your heart so desires. So why wouldn’t we take two of our biggest passions: astrology and skin care (of course!) and try to combine them? Well, we did exactly that, but with Soko Glam’s 2019 Soko Glam Best of K-Beauty™ Awards Winners
Keep reading to see why we think our favorite pimple patch is definitely a Cancer, and why Scorpios remind us of a certain popular toner.

Aries (March 21—April 20) and Gemini (May 21—June 21): Solved Skincare Coconut Oil Cleansing Pads

Soko Glam 2019 Best of K-Beauty Awards HoroscopesAries and Gemini don’t have a lot in common with each other, but they both have something in common with these coconut oil cleansing pads. Aries suns, as the ram of the zodiac, aren’t afraid to take life head-on. They can be seen as somewhat aggressive and incredibly assertive, but because of that, they definitely get things done. Similarly, the Solved Skincare Coconut Oil Cleansing Pads can take on any challenge – even your most waterproof makeup. These cleansing pads use 100% virgin coconut oil to cleanse and effectively remove SPF, makeup, and any impurities, leaving your skin refreshed and hydrated.
A cool thing about these in particular is that they’re double-sided – one larger side to remove makeup on your face, and a smaller side specifically for removing eye and lip makeup. This, of course, reminds us of Geminis, AKA “the twins.” Geminis are often stereotyped as two-faced, but that’s only because of their natural duality and their ability to adapt to any given situation easily. They’re also very inventive just like these double-sided pads – each one even has a small pocket for your fingers so you don’t have to touch your face.

Taurus (April 20—May 21): Hanskin Pore Cleansing Oil [PHA]

Soko Glam 2019 Best of K-Beauty Awards HoroscopesAs an earth sign, Taureans know how to keep their cool. They’re the sign that appears calm and collected, no matter the situation, and are considered to be the most grounded and down-to-earth. But even though they may seem laid-back, a Taurus’s perseverance is unmatched by any other sign. You might think that they’re not up to anything, but a Taurus is always working quietly behind the scenes to reach their success. That quality is why they remind us of Hanskin’s Pore Cleansing Oil [PHA]. This cleansing oil is gentle and feels soothing to the skin. What you don’t feel, though, is the number of ingredients in its formula that are helping to better your complexion, including tea tree oil to fight acne, PHAs to lightly exfoliate, and jojoba oil to hydrate skin. It might seem like just a simple product to remove your makeup, but it’s secretly making your skin much smoother and clear.

Cancer (June 21—July 22): COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch

Soko Glam 2019 Best of K-Beauty Awards HoroscopesCancer is represented by the crab, which is probably the most accurate way to describe how natives of this water sign go through life. They are known to keep a shell around themselves in order to protect the emotions that they hold very closely. This shell keeps them from getting hurt (as they can very easily), and shields them from the harsh outside world. Despite all this, they are still caring on the inside, making them of the most nurturing signs of the zodiac. This soothing but protective juxtaposition is not only prominent in Cancers, but it is also seen in one of our skin care favorites – COSRX’s Acne Pimple Master Patches. These hydrocolloid patches are able to heal whiteheads and blackheads, all while clinging to skin to avoid interference with any outside elements like water or bacteria. Unlike many traditional spot treatments that can leave dark marks, these patches treat and sterilize infection without drying out the skin. So while they clear skin and absorb sebum on the inside, they’ll keep the blemish clean and protected from the outside.

Leo (July 22—August 22): Neogen Real Vita C Powder Lemon

Soko Glam 2019 Best of K-Beauty Awards HoroscopesA Leo is definitely one of the signs that you can spot from a mile away. Not only are they known for being the center of attention, but as the lion of the zodiac, they also have a somewhat regal and alluring presence. Leos are leaders, not followers, and they attack every task with determination. Our favorite product that channels Leo energy is Neogen’s Real Vita C Powder Lemon. As a powder, this product can last much longer than other traditional forms of Vitamin C that can oxidize quickly and become ineffective. Containing a 17% concentration of pure ascorbic acid, as well as trehalose to hydrate and lemon extract to revitalize skin, this powder can help your skin glow (just like a Leo would). Just mix with your essence or toner of choice and then apply to skin.

Virgo (August 22—September 22) and Capricorn (December 21—January 20): Elensilia CPP Collagen 80% Intensive Eye Cream

Soko Glam 2019 Best of K-Beauty Awards HoroscopesVirgos and Capricorns are similar for many reasons. Not only are they both earth signs, but they’re also both known for how hardworking they can be. These signs always have a goal in mind, and they’ll do whatever it takes to get it – whether that means juggling multiple roles or putting in overtime. You might say that Virgos and Capricorns are kind of like a really great eye cream, or more specifically, the Elensilia CPP Collagen 80% Intensive Eye Cream. This eye cream is the definition of a multitasker – addressing puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles to keep your undereyes smooth and hydrated. The formula includes two peptides known for their anti-aging properties, SYN-COLL™ and Haloxyl™, to increase collagen production and to brighten.

Libra (September 22—October 22): Acwell Licorice pH Balancing Essence Mist

Soko Glam 2019 Best of K-Beauty Awards HoroscopesLibras are naturally intellectual and friendly, which makes them one of the most likable signs. Not only they are outgoing, but they’re also advocates for harmony and justice, whether that be in their own lives or others. Because of this, the symbol for Libra is a scale – representing how natives of this sign constantly seek balance. It is common that they try to find some sort of middle ground in any of their experiences – a concept that we personally think should be extended over to any skin care routine. Having a Libra in your life is just like using Acwell’s Licorice pH Balancing Essence Mist: while your Libra friend can help you balance, say, your love life or your finances, this mist will handle balancing the pH levels of your skin. Not only does it include algae extract and bamboo water to hydrate, but it also contains saccharomyces ferment filtrate and licorice water (AKA brightening superheroes) to make your skin glow.

Scorpio (October 22—November 21): Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner

Soko Glam 2019 Best of K-Beauty Awards HoroscopesTwo of a Scorpio’s trademark qualities are their intensity and willpower. It’s not easy to intimidate a Scorpio sun – they stay determined and they’re more than able to confront anyone or anything. However, because they’re a water sign, they’re also deeply emotional and fiercely loyal. If a Scorpio were one of our K-beauty favorites, it would definitely be the Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner. This product confronts blemishes head-on by exfoliating pores with salicylic acid, but because the formula also contains soothing aloe and reparative snail mucin, it’s not as harsh as it may seem.

Sagittarius (November 21—December 21): Mamonde Petal Spa Oil To Foam Cleanser

Soko Glam 2019 Best of K-Beauty Awards HoroscopesIf you know anything about Sagittarius suns, you know that they’re easy going but love to have fun. Instead of sticking to a specific routine or way of life, they go with the flow to see what adventures life has in the cards for them. Something else that loves to defy routine? The Mamonde Petal Spa Oil to Foam Cleanser. The double cleanse is obviously a staple in the Korean 10-step routine, but some days, one more step can feel like one too many. Instead, this cleanser consolidates both steps by starting out as an oil formula and then transforming into a foam cleanser once water is added. With the use of soapberry extract and moisturizing damask rose oil, the cleanser can dissolve makeup and sunscreen while still removing dirt and sweat, efficiently cleansing without stripping your skin. Just like a Sagittarius, this cleanser will make your life much easier.

Aquarius (January 20—February 19): Mediheal N.M.F Intensive Hydrating Sheet Mask

Soko Glam 2019 Best of K-Beauty Awards HoroscopesAquarians have some of the typical marks of an air sign. They’re charming but eccentric, and they stray from the status quo to follow their own path. If you know an Aquarius, you probably admire them for their individuality and outspokenness. Despite these trademark qualities, Aquarius is often mistaken for a water sign – even though they exhibit almost opposite characteristics – for obvious reasons. Not only does their name fuel that misconception, but Aquarius’s symbol is also the “Water Bearer,” which is meant to represent how the sign likes to start anew by washing away the problems of the past.
If you’re looking to take on this Aquarian mindset, we recommend bringing one (or a couple) of Mediheal’s N.M.F. Intensive Hydrating Sheet Masks along on your way to a fresh start. Just like the sign, this mask appears watery on the outside – but it also utilizes other powerful ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and amino acids to deeply hydrate and transform dry, flaky skin. It contains the same components of Natural Moisturizing Factor (N.M.F.), which is naturally found in the skin so that it stays healthy and hydrated. The mask also exfoliates dead skin and tones with the help of willow bark and witch hazel, giving your skin a clean slate (in true Aquarius fashion, of course).

Pisces (February 19—March 21): Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream

Soko Glam 2019 Best of K-Beauty Awards HoroscopesPisces suns are some of the most sensitive people you could ever meet, and they’re also very kind-hearted and calming to be around. They always put their feelings – and others’ feelings – first, which makes them the most compassionate of the zodiac. As a friend, you can always count on a Pisces to care for you when you’re stressed or troubled. If your skin is stressed or troubled though, a Pisces might not be as big of a help. You should count on Klairs’s Midnight Blue Calming Cream instead, which is popular for effectively soothing any type of irritated skin, such as sunburns, areas of redness, and even skin after extracting or laser treatments. This cream is formulated with centella asiatica to hydrate and relieve irritated skin, as well as Guaiazulene, which is extracted from chamomile oil to keep your skin calm and refreshed. It’s perfect for sensitive skin, but it also moisturizes acne-prone and oily skin without triggering breakouts.

Plus Sean shares his current holy grails and his skin care do’s and don’ts.

If you’re like us, constantly scrolling through Instagram in search of skin care inspiration and new finds, you may have come across Sean Garrette, a licensed esthetician with a knack for making bottles of toner and tubes of masks look photogenic. Not only is his feed filled with perfectly shot and edited images of his favorite skin care products, but with a glowing complexion, he is the definition of #skingoals. Sean has gained a following by posting in-depth reviews of products he’s tried, his own personal skin care routine, and of course his tips and recommendations on how to achieve clear, healthy skin.

But even though his skin looks flawless now, it’s something he’s had to work for. He openly talks about how he deals with consistent hyperpigmentation, and how he suffers from fungal acne and a skin condition that causes razor bumps and inflammation after shaving. Knowing some of his followers might deal with the same skin issues, he also shares what products and routines help treat them. Ahead, he tells us his best skin advice, some of his favorite skin care products, and what he looks for when trying new products.

The Klog: On your Instagram, you talk about your journey with fungal acne and inflammation. What have you learned about your skin through treating these concerns?

Sean: From treating fungal acne and other skin issues I’ve had, I’ve learned to be gentle and kind with my skin. Often times when we’re experiencing breakouts and skin issues, we want to attack our skin and use very aggressive and harsh treatments. The best method is to use effective ingredients and products to solve the issue but also treat our skin with love and care.

To treat fungal acne, the star product that helped heal my skin was something called Nizoral. It’s a anti-dandruff shampoo that has an ingredient called ketoconazole. Ketoconazole specifically helps kill the bacteria and yeast that feeds the fungal acne. I would apply 2-3 times a day as a mask for about 15-20 mins at a time. It took patience and consistency, but it helped heal my skin.

You try new products often – do you have any holy grails?

I have a few holy grail products that I’m sure all of my followers know because I never stop talking about them LOL. I love Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting BHA 2% Liquid, Antioxidant Pore Purifier and Azelaic Acid Booster, Krave Beauty’s Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser and Great Barrier Relief serum. I also have a ton of K-Beauty Favorites! I love the COSRX Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Power Essence, Ariul’s 7 Days Vitamin Mist and sheet masks.

What product and beauty trends are you excited about right now?

I honestly don’t pay much attention to beauty trends. I find that a lot of them tend to be a bit gimmicky. For instance, the whole CBD in skin care movement. There was a lot of misinformation brands were putting out, and most products didn’t even include CBD in the formulas –  it was hemp seed oil.

Personally, I’m excited for any brightening products! I suffer from hyperpigmentation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, so any product that can help my skin look brighter and more even toned — I want to try it.

What do you look for when testing and reviewing products? What tips do you have for finding a product that works for you?

When I’m testing a new product, I always want to compare the claims of the brand to the actual ingredients of the product. If the star ingredient of the product isn’t included in the first 5-7 lines of the ingredients list, then 9/10 it’s not as effective as the product may be claiming it to be. That doesn’t mean that you won’t see results, but the ingredient or formula may not be as potent. I also always looks to see if there are any added fragrances, essential oils, or irritating ingredients in the formula. If these ingredients are higher or come before the actual actives in the product, it’s a pass for me.

Testing a product varies for me. There are some products that I’ll know if I like immediately, and there are others that take time to form an opinion on. I would say, test a product for about 4-6 weeks to determine if you’re seeing results from it and if it’s beneficial to your routine and skin.

What are the best skin tips you learned during your journey becoming an esthetician?

I’ve learned that less is more sometimes when it comes to skin care, especially when it comes to exfoliation! I see a lot of clients that damage their skin and/or moisture barrier from over exfoliating. Generally, using a chemical exfoliant 2-3 times a week is more than enough for the skin.
