Welcome to Dear Soko, a series dedicated to answering your biggest skin care questions with advice from Soko Glam’s skin experts. Whether you’re confused about specific ingredients or what you need to do to achieve healthier skin overall, our experts are here to guide you!

This week’s question is: “What are some products that are great for both sensitive and oily skin?”

Here, a Soko Glam skin expert’s answer:

It is important to understand how sensitive skin-friendly products are formulated. Sensitive skin products are typically formulated without ingredients that are known to be commonly irritating. This is why sensitive skin-friendly products are a great place to start! Of course everyone’s skin is different and there could still be ingredients in that formula that you find don’t end up working well for your individual skin.

RELATED: The Skin Care Products To Rotate Into Your Routine If You Have Oily Skin

To predict any reaction you want, avoid applying a new product all over your face, especially if your skin tends to be reactive. This is where patch testing comes in. Here, at The Klog, we recommend patch testing every single new skin care product in routine regardless of skin type. Of course, I do know how exciting it can be to open a new product and completely understand the urge to start using it right away. At the very least I recommend introducing new products into your routine slowly so you have a better idea which products are working out for your skin and which ones you might need to consider returning or gifting.

What’s great about K-beauty for sensitive skin is that the products lean to being more gentle and sensitive skin friendly. Sensitive skin is actually reported to be the most self-identified skin type in Korea. Even with more active ingredients like vitamin C or exfoliating acids, Koreans formulas typically favor lower percentages sometimes even low enough to be able to be used twice daily. To be sure, you want to take a look at the product itself and consider the percentage of the acids and also the usage directions that the brand recommends.

Now, when looking at these sensitive skin friendly products, you want to consider some keywords to find products that are lightweight enough for oily skin. Words like “watery” and “milky” are often used to describe lightweight products that absorb into the skin well which is what we want to avoid a greasy look. In the past year, “cream skin” has emerged on the horizon as a K-beauty trend. In Korea ‘toners’ are sometimes referred to as ‘skin’ so a cream toner is a milky toner that is often meant to act as both a toner and moisturizer! How to best use a cream skin will differ between brands, so again you’ll want to check out the official directions. ‘Gels’ and ‘gel creams’ are great texture key words for moisturizers!

Gels can sometimes be too light for even oily skin types. They tend work best for oily skin types in the warmer months or oily skin types in warmer climates though of course every formula is different. Gel creams have a best of both worlds mix of a lightweight, gel-like texture and more hydrating cream texture so they tend to work well for oily skin types year round. Another great keyword to look out for is “emulsion.” Emulsions are lightweight hydrators that sit in between essences and moisturizer in texture. For this reason, they are a great alternative to moisturizer for oil and even combo-oily skin types. Each emulsion will have its texture ranging from super lightweight to being more viscous. Check out the reviews on emulsions to get an idea of which one might be more suitable for your skin based on how oily you tend to get!

Sensitive skin is often listed by brands as a skin type, but some sensitive skin types may be more oily while others may be more dry! Knowing that a product is formulated for sensitive skin is the first step to finding products that may work well for you. To best tailor your routine, look for textures that will work well for how oily or dry your skin tends to be!

I’m one of the lucky ones out there that can handle new products without getting irritated. Thank God, because I test a ton of product. But my teammate on my left (Sara!) tells me that she is not quite so lucky and how she and her roommate are very sensitive to a lot of poorly formulated products out there.

Sensitive skin can by trying because you’re skin is often left feeling irritated — red, itchy, and sometimes even painful after applying something topically. Nobody has time for that! We all want to feel clean, moisturized and refreshed.

Finding products that works for sensitive skin involves a lot of trial and error, which means you tend to stay loyal to a product not because it’s particular good, but because it’s the only product that doesn’t make you break out.

The good thing is that the feedback from many of you is that you are typically sensitive and you have found success with Korean products! I love when I hear that.

So naturally, I’ve been asked: Are Korean skin care products really “less harsh” compared to Western products?

Well, when I spoke with the head of R&D at AmorePacific, Paul Kang, he said many Koreans identify with having sensitive skin. So, Korean cosmetic companies keep this in mind while creating their formulas. They tend to focus on using the most effective, yet gentle ingredients for the skin.

In my quest to find more skin care products for sensitive skin types, I looked to the brand Klairs, a.k.a. Dear Klairs. It was on my radar after tons of people actually emailed me to test it out. Have you guys heard of it?

Klairs isn’t a masstige brand with tons of brick and mortars in Seoul or a huge marketing budget with celebrity endorsements, but it has swiftly and quickly become a cult K-beauty favorite for their gentle yet effective ingredients. They also commit to 5 values: no animal testing (!!!), alcohol free, no parabens, no artificial coloring and the packaging is eco friendly.

After testing it, I’m excited to finally curate Klairs on Soko Glam.

My first Klairs love? Gentle Black Seed Deep Cleansing Oil.

It’s made up of black seed oil – from a plant called Nigella Sativa.

Some of the benefits of black seed oil: Great moisturizer, is packed with antioxidants to ward off premature aging. Not to mention it is anti-inflammatory and contains vitamins, essential fatty acids, amino acids. All skin pleasers!

Why I curated it: I love the medium to light-weight consistency of the oil and how it leaves my skin feeling soft and not at all sticky. I have tested one too many oil cleansers that are either too watery or way too emollient. With a splash of water it emulsifies easily and gently (which means it turns slightly milky and thus helps effectively remove the excess oil-based debris). Remember to massage a pump or two of this oil cleanser on a dry face, even with makeup. Cause like every good oil cleanser should, it should remove makeup easily and effortlessly.

And packaging? As much as I like super cute stuff, this packaging is simple and unisex. It has a natural, apothecary-type feel to it. #SokoMan approved? 🙂

Mmm, milky!

A final note: No matter what brand oil cleanser you use, make sure your oil cleanser is formulated to emulsify. Some have asked me if they can use straight, natural olive oil found in the kitchen. Not that you can’t (it’s a free country that declared yesterday that #lovewins 🙂 but olive oil used for cooking means it won’t easily wash off with water. Oil cleansers formulated in the lab specifically for skin care involves adding the right ingredients that help thoroughly wash off the skin when water is introduced. That’s why I always make sure the oil cleanser I use turns slightly milky. If it doesn’t, you may be just adding a very emollient topical product onto your face that won’t really be doing you any favors. It may not be really cleansing and it might mean clogged pore central.

Finally this trio has made it to Soko Glam!

So thats my take! Are you also a fan of KLAIRS? So far I’ve curated two other Klairs items: the Rich moist soothing sheet mask and the Supple Preparation Facial Toner. And I’m sure there will be more to come. I’m currently testing their Freshly Juiced Drop (a Vitamin C serum!)

This brand wouldn’t have caught my eye without your help. If you’ve tried this brand I’d love to hear your recommendations and comments below or please leave a review at individual product listings here!

xx charlotte

I always underestimate the stress of the entire month of December, and then I’m kind of blown away by how overwhelmed I am the entire month. A large part of the holidays means traveling, and for me, that means “travel skin.” Which is just THE WORST. Is it just me, or does traveling induce some kind of super grease-ball action in anyone else? It’s this horrible combination of getting super dry on airplanes, having my skin start to scale off, and then just looking like a shiny beast for the remainder of my stay. I think my skin overcompensates for the dry plane air by producing more oil than usual, mixed with getting used to the air, water and climate in whatever new city I happen to be in. So I get this really awesome combination of dry, flaky skin mixed with an oily complexion. Great. And believe me, I took all the preventative measures you’re supposed to take when you travel, like drinking tons of water and moisturizing.

I flew to Los Angeles to see my family over Thanksgiving, and despite the fact that I wore a sheet mask on the plane because I have no shame, I still landed with my skin completely out of balance. Then it began its routine of getting a bit scaly and shiny simultaneously, so after a decent face scrubbing, I reached for some finishing powder. Setting my makeup with Banila Co Prime Primer Finish Powder gave me some security that my makeup stayed put and I didn’t look like a lightbulb in twenty minutes. I love its light, sheer coverage that doesn’t affect the tint or texture of my makeup. Since it’s so light, so I could still see my highlighter through it, but it kept me from greasing up or my makeup from sliding down. It comes with its own little powder puff, but I found that applying it with a brush led to a sheer and more even coverage.

Between Christmas and the New Year, BF and I took an 11-hour train ride from NYC to Montreal—a first for me—though I knew I’d be in a tight seating arrangements and didn’t want to be reapplying makeup and powder the entire train ride. So I slipped some TonyMoly Oil-Blotting Paper in my backpack to see if it actually made more of a difference than my go-to, toilet seat covers (my life is so glamorous). These little guys have a thin profile, so they don’t take up any space in my bag, which is a must. When I started feeling myself getting oily, I blotted my entire T-Zone with just one sheet, which was surprisingly effective. I definitely thought I would need more than one go at it. It didn’t disturb any of the makeup on my face either, which was pleasant and appreciated. I kept them in my bag for the entire trip, and they came in handy on several occasions when I needed to quickly look presentable and didn’t have the time/energy to re-apply a face full of makeup and powder.

New Years however is a whole other ball game. There’s no time to be fixing makeup errors in the bathroom as the clock ticks down to midnight. I knew my makeup needed to stay the hell on no matter what went down, so for that I turned to Peripera Oil Capture Pact. I had already decided that I was gonna rock a more vintage/baby goth look for the night: big cat eye, red lip, and a Wednesday Addams dress, so some classic pressed powder was just the thing to get an even, pale complexion that stayed on all night and was easy to re-apply. The compact itself is adorable and reminds me of the ones my grandma used in the 40’s. It fits in my purse, and has a cute little powder puff that makes it easy to apply even in the darkest of dingy New Year’s Eve party bathrooms. It also has a really pleasant, powdery smell that isn’t overwhelming but makes me feel like a fancy lady from the olden days who always looks put together and doesn’t even have greasy skin situations!

I know these will all come in handy when the true winter winds start roaring as well, and not just during travel time. I got a taste of what’s to come up in Montreal, and as freaky as this unseasonably warm holiday has been, I’m in no rush to be in below-freezing temperatures any time soon. Though, I did have an excellent excuse to buy some new boots in Canada, because I “forgot” to bring proper footwear with me. I hope you all had beautiful holiday seasons and are ready to fiercely tackle the year underway!

My skin type has changed throughout the years. In my teens and early twenties, I had oily skin and needed to use blotting pads during the day to keep shine under control. But now in my twenties, my skin has taken on a new temperament. Excess oil and shine are no longer my beauty woes, but I’m still dealing with hyperpigmentation from old acne scars. I’ve developed small patches of dry skin. My face had taken on too many bitter winters in New York City and running in cold weather has made my skin feel tight and less supple.

… Enter essential oils.*

To be honest, I was at first deterred by the idea of using essential or facial oils since I had spent so many years trying to normalize my skin. What good would slabbing some oil on it do? But I quickly learned that not all facial oils are the same. There are oils that are intensely hydrating and as slick as olive oil, but there are also essential oils that are have a serum-like consistency or a creamy texture. Just like essences, toners, and face washes, there’s an essential oil for everyone.

For treating dry, rough patches of skin, I recommend Skinfood’s Premium Avocado Rich Essential Oil. This product is an essential oil in its true sense of the word for me. It’s slippery to the touch and very moisturizing. It comes with a glass dropper bottle, which makes it easy to control how much product I want to use. Avocado oil is extremely nourishing and is packed with omega-3 fatty acids that help keep skin looking plump and young-looking. I find this oil to also be great for moisturizing my cuticles, removing waterproof eye makeup and red lipstick, and preventing hangnails. In addition to avocado oil, it has nourishing jojoba seed and fruit oils.

The essential oil I’ve come to be completely obsessed with is Goodal’s Super Seed Oil Plus Balancing Moisturizer. Its lightweight formula is made for normal to combination skin, and it’s designed to help even skin tone from redness and hyperpigmentation. This is the type of essential oil that my skin takes well to throughout the seasons of the year. It absorbs quickly and leaves my skin feeling refreshed. I love applying this after washing my face in the evening. You can either lightly pat it on your face or massage it into the skin.

As someone who has used mostly foaming face washes, I was pleasantly surprised when I tried Klairs Gentle Deep Black Cleansing Oil. It has an oily, serum-like consistency but is not sticky at all. It’s made with black bean, black sesame, and black currant seed oils that help bring  balance to the the skin’s natural oils while deep-cleaning pores. This two-steps-in-one product removes waterproof makeup and thoroughly cleanses my face. To use this product, apply one to two pumps of the oil on dry skin (even with makeup!).  Massage it into skin for about a minute, making sure you cover all areas of your face. Then, rinse it off with warm water. This oil cleanser is great for normal to combination skin.

Lastly, I’d have to say that I absolutely love all the packaging of these products. The simple pump of the Klairs cleansing oil makes it easy for me to control how much product I want, and the glass dropper bottles for the Skinfood avocado oil allows me to apply the tinsiest amount of product to my hands and feet.

Suffer no longer! We’re tackling which ingredients will gel with your skin type.

Living with oily skin can be an eternal struggle. When you’re a teen, you have to deal with acne, so you made it a habit to never put any kind of cream on your face that could trigger a breakout. But then, suddenly, you’re in your mid-twenties and start to see some fine lines drawing their way on your forehead. Yet, you’re still scared to put anything on your skin lest it flares up another breakout.

As you can see, there is no surprise in finding out that people with oily skin are searching like crazy for that “miracle formula” that helps you to prevent and revert signs of aging without bringing acne back to their faces. Don’t worry, we’re here to clear your confusion.

Skincare Ingredients to Add to Your Routine if You Have Oily Skin

According to Joshua Zeichner, the director of clinical and cosmetic surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, those with oily skin want to look for products that will help minimize the appearance of pores. “Products with alpha and beta hydroxyacids are the best because they exfoliate dead cells and remove excess oil from the skin,” he says. Adding a toner that combines both these acids, like Some By Mi’s AHA-BHA-PHA 30Days Miracle Toner, is a smart choice.

He also suggests adding a clay-based mask to your routine to “help with radiance and to remove oil and impurities from the skin.” If you’re looking for a great clay mask, you can’t go wrong with RE:P Bio Fresh Mask with Real Calming Herb—it also soothes irritation and redness plus, moisturizes your skin while pulling out impurities.

Rebecca Tung, a dermatologist in La Grange Park, Illinois, adds that finding products with vitamin C will help those with oily skin ward off aging. “Vitamin C-containing products can help lift unwanted pigmentation. Plus, they are non-acnegenic and can help minimize pores,” says Tung. “They can minimize oil and acne, do a nice job with exfoliation, and reduce fine lines and lighten up hyperpigmentation.” For a vitamin C-packed product, we love the Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin C Serum. It has a 5% concentration of vitamin C to moisturize and brighten skin.

Tung also recommends her patients to use retinols, since they work to prevent aging and keep things less oily. “On top of reducing oil production, retinols can reverse the signs of aging and sun damage, like brown spots and fine wrinkling,” she says. Saturday Skin’s Yuzu Vitamin C Sleep Mask is a wrinkle-busting and smoothing overnight mask enriched with retinol and vitamin C.

Skincare Ingredients to Avoid if You Have Oily Skin

Zeichner recommends for those with oily skin to stay away from certain antioxidants. “Vitamin E is oil soluble and may weigh the skin down,” explains Zeichner. “If you have oily skin, stick to a vitamin C option without vitamin E since vitamin C is water soluble, light, and won’t cause breakouts.”

How do you find anti-aging products for oily skin? It can be a real challenge, given that so many anti-aging products tend to be on the heavier side and can actually end up clogging oily skin before offering the anti-aging benefits. Read on to find out how to refine your search.

So you have oily skin. Everything was fine in your teens and early 20s when your main focus when it came to skin care products was anything that would keep your sebum production in control and keep acne at bay. But then your late 20s or 30s hit and suddenly you’re craving something more.
Afraid to veer into the whole anti-aging skin care product territory (remember that one time you took a gamble on an anti-aging cream and your pores were clogged for weeks?), you’ve settled on the fact that there’s just not a skin care product out there that’s going to offer you the intense benefits that all those heavy anti-aging products do yet still be light enough to not clog your pores and kick your sebum production into overdrive.
It’s time to change your mind! When it comes to finding anti-aging products that will work on oily skin, the key is paying attention to the type of product you choose and the ingredients that are in that product. Let me explain…
Pay attention the type of product you choose:
When looking for an anti-aging product, you’ll generally want to stay away from creams and emulsions if you have super oily skin. Most creams that are billed as anti-aging are super heavy and full of a lot of occlusives and jam-packed with a lot of hydrating properties. You don’t need additional hydration; you need an adequately hydrating product that has other ingredients that directly address wrinkles, sagging, brightness, and puffiness.
So on that note, you’ll want to steer towards products that have a lighter consistency, like cleansers and toners. “Oily and combination skin are best treated with ingredients that will remove excess oils without stripping the skin,” says Monique Olivares, a PA at Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City. “Gentle washes with hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid and/or salicylic acid can achieve a healthy level of degreasing without causing excess dryness and inflammation. In addition, they provide an excellent anti-aging benefit.”
Cleansers are good choice, but those wash off. If you’re looking for a product that stays on and infuses skin with nutrients, seek a powerhouse toner. Korean toners are unlike their American counterparts. They go way beyond just offering an extra cleansing step in your routine. Not only do they work to deep clean pores and erase any extra impurities on your skin, they’re often packed with skin-benefitting ingredients to address certain skin concerns. You could kind of say that Korean toners are a fusion of toners and serums in one. Which brings me to my next point…
Pay attention the ingredients in your toner:
There are two things to look for in an anti-aging toner for oily skin: A formula that balances your skin and controls sebum production and a formula that is packed with light ingredients that target specific issues. “Toners can be especially helpful after cleansing of the skin by balancing the natural skin pH and removing additional impurities,” says Olivares. “A great anti-aging toner will address most causes of skin aging such as free radicals, inflammation, and hydration as well as provide nutrients.” She recommends looking for toners that feature hyaluronic acid and vitamins.
If you’re looking for brightness, give the D’alba Piedmont Peptide No-Sebum Balancing Toner a try.
This toner is super lightweight (it feels like patting water into your skin) and features two superior anti-aging ingredients: pearl extract and Italian white truffle. Pearl extract is an ingredient heralded in the Korean skin care community for its amazing brightening properties. It works to even out skin tone and lift any signs of redness or pigmentation. The other main ingredient, Italian white truffle extract, is a coveted ingredient that works to help speed up cell regeneration, shedding dead skin cells faster, lifting wrinkles and revealing fresh skin.
Don’t worry about these ingredients clogging your pores; this toner was formulated with a blend of BHAs to lightly exfoliate skin and control sebum production. So, you’ll get blackhead treatment and wrinkle and pigmentation all in one little toner!
If you’re looking to lift dark spots, give the Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner a try.

This is one of those do-it-all toners that works beautifully for oily skin. Packed with salicylic acid, this toner goes to work on excess sebum, leaving skin with less acne and less shiny. Even more, one of the main ingredients is aloe vera extract, which works to soothe skin and decrease puffiness and redness.
Snail mucin is another featured ingredient, which is one of the best secrets for plump, clear, and glowing skin. Snail mucin contains an impressive blend of amino acids that actually help the skin rebuild itself, lifting the appearance of acne scars and sun spots, while strengthening the skin’s barrier, allowing it look plumper and more supple.
If you’re looking to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, try out the Benton Snail Bee High Content Skin.
This toner is for all of you out there with oily skin who cringe at the thought of applying more layers of product on your already-congested skin. The Benton Snail Bee High Content Skin has a very light and watery texture, so it absorbs quickly without feeling heavy on the skin.
But don’t forget about the ingredients! You will fall in love with this toner if you’re looking to lift fine lines. It’s star ingredient is snail mucin, which is popular for its brightening, healing, and hydrating properties. Alongside it is bee venom, an ingredient that boosts collagen production to smooth wrinkles and increases the skin’s ability to absorb nutrients. Rounding out the main ingredients are niacinamide and camellia sinensis leaf water to soothe and nourish the skin without clogging your pores.
Bottom line:
Don’t give up on your dreams of younger-looking skin if you have oily skin and also are starting to see some fine lines. There is a happy compromise! You just have to seek out the right type of product (lightweight toners or serums) with the right ingredients (actives and vitamin-enriched nutrients instead of occlusives).

When you’re living life with oily skin, the thought of slathering oil all over your face can make you pretty nervous. But it shouldn’t! We’re here to quell your worries with our guide to the best oil cleansers for oily skin.

We recently published an extensive 10 step Korean skin care routine for oily skin, and in that post we explain in detail how using an oil cleanser on oily skin will not make you breakout or make your skin more oily. It’s kind of tricky to understand, but oil cleansers actually help reduce excess sebum and regulate oil production!
When you’re looking for one to help control your oil production, it’s really all about choosing the right oil cleanser with the right ingredients. In our oily skin routine, we suggest using the Klairs Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil, which controls sebum production. But there are other great oil cleansers for oily skin! Check out four more that are perfect for keeping oil at bay.
Banila Clean It Zero Purity

A cult favorite for a reason! This balm-like oil cleanser completely removes the heaviest makeup and leaves skin feeling clean and fresh. It’s also hypoallergenic, which means it’s great for sensitive skin. We love it because it effectively cleanses but also retains essential oils that help keep your skin properly moisturized.
Klavuu Pure Pearlsation Divine Pearl Cleansing Oil

A post shared by 클라뷰 KLAVUU (@klavuu_official) on

Sure, this oil cleanser has a thick consistency, but that doesn’t mean it feels heavy on your skin or will clog your pores. I’m personally in love with this cleanser because you only need one pump to sufficiently cover your face and it spreads out into a thin layer that smoothly removes makeup and lifts impurities. It’s also infused with pearl extract to help brighten your skin and it smells like vanilla (in the best way). After using this Klavuu oil cleanser, your face feels simply clean—without any dryness or leftover residue.
Missha M Perfect BB Deep Cleansing Oil

If you have both oily and acne-prone skin, this cleanser was made for you. It deeply removes the most stubborn makeup (like liquid lipsticks and waterproof mascaras) and it has tea tree oil in the formula to help prevent blemishes. You’re left with skin that’s deeply cleansed with no oily feeling remaining.

Here’s another cleansing oil that comes as a balm! The great thing about cleansing oil balms for oily skin is that you can control exactly how much you’re putting on so you never overdo it.
Scoop up a penny-size amount of this balm and spread it on your dry skin. It will quickly dissolve any dirt, makeup, and pollution without adding a heavy oily feeling to your skin. Once you rinse it off with lukewarm water, the balm will turn into a gentle foaming cleanser that lifts up any residue that was still lingering on your skin. The formula also contains moringa pterygosperma seed extract, an ingredient that helps rebuild collagen and prevent fine lines from creeping up.

When you’re trying to find the right face serum for oily skin, you may think you should avoid those with oil. But you shouldn’t! Read on to find out why.

If you have oily skin, you probably feel wary when it comes to applying skin care products with oil. After all, your whole MO when it comes to your skin care regimen is to reduce the amount of oil your pores produce, not douse it with more of the stuff. But what about when a lot of the anti-aging products you love contain oils? Does that mean you can’t reap the benefits of these prized oils for reducing wrinkles and brightening skin?
Absolutely not. “It is a myth that someone with oily skin cannot use an oil based product,”says Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research at the Department of Dermatology at Moint Sinai Hospital. “Natural oils are loaded with antioxidants and free fatty acids that nourish and protect the skin.” The key here is finding the right products that contain light oils that will work in tandem with the natural oils on your face to only add antioxidant nutrition instead of excess sebum.
An important point of what Zeichner said is the focus on using natural oils on oily skin instead of any of the DIY oils you see on Pinterest. “Natural oils are loaded with antioxidants and free fatty acids that nourish and protect the skin,” he explains. “Cosmetic grade oils used in skin care are very different than applying pure canola oil on your face. These products are light, quickly absorbed, and will not leave you feeling heavy or greasy.”
Why a serum is the right oil-based product for oily skin:
If you’re still feeling a bit nervous about adding an oil to our routine, you don’t need to dive right in with a full on face oil. Instead, opt for a light anti-aging serum with an oil in it. “Oily skin is usually your body’s way of trying to balance out areas that are dry,” says dermatologist Kavita Mariwalla. “By using a light serum-based oil you can still hydrate the skin without clogging your pores or inducing increased oil.”
A great starter oil-serum is the Neogen White Truffle Serum in Oil Drop. It’s a thin serum with truffle oil droplets dispersed inside of it, which means that it goes on way lighter instead of a heavy, greasy oil:

The white truffle oil in the serum contains high concentrations of vitamin C, which works to even out skin tone and brighten acne scars. The serum also contains strong amounts of adenosine (a powerful anti-wrinkle ingredient) and niacinamide to add luminosity to skin.
In theory, those with oily skin can view a serum like the Neogen Serum in Oil Drop as a light moisturizer. “In general, if you are looking to re-balance the skin, this serum formulation can be thought of as a good humectant or moisturizer,” says Mariwalla. “Even oily skin needs moisture, so if you are more on the oily side or you have acneic skin consider using it conservatively to balance your skin’s moisture content.”
Also, you should note that serums tend to have higher concentrations of ingredients than moisturizers, so when there’s oil in a serum, it usually serves a larger purpose instead of just providing moisture. “Serums tend to be more potent formulations than lotions or creams and are usually non-comedogenic,” says Mariwalla. “Even those that contain oil usually act in a way that the oil is there to simply help the ingredients penetrate the skin so they key actives can work more effectively.”
Bottom line:
If you have oily skin, don’t shy away from serums with oils in them. Instead, swap out your moisturizer for a serum infused with oil to kill two birds with one stone. When you think about it, your oily skin will fare much better by using one product that has enough nourishing ingredients to act as a serum/moisturizer hybrid than slathering on a serum and moisturizer separately and possibly risk clogging your pores.
By incorporating a serum with oil into your routine you’ll be adding strong antioxidants to your skin and hydrating your skin in one handy product. The key is to look for the right serums with oil that are formulated to balance skin and not congest it.
